2022 FIFA World Cup Group Finals Sleepers

Mexico

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: +2,500

Mexico’s national soccer team is always a spectacle to watch in the World Cup. In 16 appearances, the nation managed a quarter-final appearance twice. While these are relatively thin numbers compared to the heavyweights, the grit and determination of The Tricolor make them viable finals sleeper picks in November.

The team holds plenty of notable rewards on the international stage. Mexico is eight-time Gold Cup champions, including a recent victory in 2019. They also found success in the CONCACAF Nations League Finals, finishing runners-up in 2012, and three CONCACAF Championship titles in eight appearances. To cap it all off, the South American team holds a FIFA Confederations Cup title won in 1999. Ultimately, the dark horse is a major threat in the group stages and is likely to stir things up once they head on to the knockout stage.

Poland

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: +2,500

The current Polish national team is synonymous with Robert Lewandowski. He currently holds the nation’s top-scoring title with 76 goals to his name. Since recently bringing his talents to Barcelona, many believe that the 33-year-old will help the team advance to the knockout stage. In 2021, Poland won five of its seven FIFA World Cup qualification games, featuring a 1-1 draw against favorites England and a 2-1 defeat in the hands of Hungary. This year, they managed to win both qualification games before the UEFA Nations League took off.

Poland is not exactly the winningest team in the tournament, but are tough competitors. In nine World Cup appearances, the nation managed two third-place finishes in 1974 and 1982. Recently appointed head coach Czesław Michniewicz hopes to introduce more winning elements to the team as well.

Ecuador

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: +4,000

These are exciting times for the Ecuadorians as they get to see their national soccer team for the fourth time in World Cup history. In three appearances, The Tri got its first taste of the knockout stages in 2006. Although they fell to England in a close 1-0 defeat, we saw an impressive display of heart, grit, and perseverance from the team.

After missing out on the 2018 edition of the contest, they return to the stage in high spirits. It’s been a shaky 2022 qualifier run for the team, drawing three of its four games. We saw better results from the team looking back at its 2021 results. In eight qualifying matches, Ecuador won four games, drew two, and lost two. These are proper numbers considering the level of competition in South America. Keep an eye out for The Tricolors as they hold their spot as a top finals sleeper pick in November.

Cameroon

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: +8,000

African teams are always a delight to watch at the World Cup. They exude unmatched energy and showcase quality players. Cameroon is no exception to that. The Indomitable Lions get their eighth shot at a World Cup title this year. In seven appearances, the best they delivered is a quarter-final arrival in 1990. Since then, we haven’t seen the nation get past the group stages.

This year, Cameroonian soccer legend Rigobert Song procures head coaching duties. Following a successful qualification run in 2021 with five wins in nine games, he continues the momentum with more successful international bouts in 2022. The five-time Africa Cup of Nations winners are on a hot streak, winning their second World Cup qualification game against Algeria. Earlier this year, they also held an undefeated streak in the Africa Cup of Nations with four wins in six games.
