Lionel Messi takes the helm
Head coach Lionel Acaloni has done an impeccable job since taking over the team. He helped the team end Argentina’s title drought with a close 1-0 victory in Brazil at the 2021 Copa America final. But while the squad has seen many of the seasoned names hang their jerseys during the 2010s, a younger lineup continues with a talented-rich nation. Group C features an interesting mix of teams, but Argentina is the strong favorite to top the group at -250.
The only threat La Albiceleste has is its injury concerns. Also, Lionel Messi pushing 35 and transitioning into the twilight phase of his career, might not be as effective as he used to be in the previous World Cup. The Argentines need to be flexible enough to cover for him and plan their tactics accordingly. Depending on Messi alone would make the team vulnerable to mistakes, which they have to avoid coming into the competition.

The rest of their Group C matches should be relatively straightforward given the team’s experience. There’s no room for error, but expect Argentina to book a ticket to the knockouts early on.
