Created in 1955, the tournament works on a group and knockout format, beginning in late June and ending in late May or early June. After a qualifying phase, 32 teams are drawn in eight groups of four, playing each other in a double round robin. Eight group winners and runner-ups qualify to a knockout phase. The winner of the tournament qualifies for the following Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.

The teams with most success in the tournament have been the Spanish clubs, winning a total of 18 times. England follows with 13 and Italy with 12. It has been won by 22 teams, 12 of them have won it more than once. The team with most success is Real Madrid, winning it a total of 13 times.
