The Spanish Primera Division, also known as La Liga, is the top professional soccer league in Spain. It’s considered the top league in Europe, based on UEFA’s league coefficient rankings. It’s the sixth wealthiest professional sport in revenue, behind the NFL, MLB, NBA, Premier League and NHL.

Created in 1929, the league holds 20 and has had a total 62 teams participate since its inception. Nine teams have become champions. Real Madrid has won a total of 34 times, with Barcelona at second with 26. The league works under a promotion and relegation system, as the three lowest teams in the table are relegated to Segunda Division and the top two from that league are promoted, with an another club promoted based on a playoff series between the third to sixth place. By the end of the season, the top four teams qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League group stage. The team in fifth place qualifies for the Europa League.
