2021 NFL Week 10 Preview, Odds and Picks

By Hank Blaine

How unusual has this NFL season been entering Week 10? In the AFC, 11 teams have a winning record, tied with the AFC in 2014 for the most in a conference entering Week 10 since 1970. Five divisions overall are led by a team that did not win its division last season and three divisions have a team in first place or tied for first that missed the playoffs in 2020. Here’s a look at two winning picks from Week 10.

Cleveland Browns vs. New England Patriots

  • 2021 NFL Week 10 Odds: New England Patriots -1

It’s a 1 p.m. ET kickoff Sunday on CBS. This is a hugely important game in the AFC playoff race with both clubs currently at 5-4 but probably not winning their respective divisions – thus, the winner would have a huge head-to-head tiebreaker.

This will be the 1,000th career game in Patriots history including playoffs, the most among any of the original AFL teams that began play in 1960. Of the current NFL teams that began play in 1960, only Dallas (1,001) has played in more games. The Pats have won the last three games against the Browns, including a 27-13 victory in the last meeting between the two teams on Oct. 27, 2019 at Gillette Stadium.

The big story here is that both clubs may be down to their third-string running backs. For Cleveland, star Nick Chubb is surely out because he tested positive for COVID this week. Chubb, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the Browns’ 41-16 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals last Sunday and leads the team with 721 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns this season.

Over the last two regular seasons, the Browns are 13-6 with Chubb and 3-3 without him. Cleveland did beat Denver a few weeks ago when Chubb was out injured. Backup Kareem Hunt, a former NFL rushing king, is on injured reserve. Thus, D’Ernest Johnson is likely to be the featured back in this one. Johnson impressed in Week 7 against the Broncos, running for 146 yards and a score in a dominant performance.

New England’s top two backs, starter Damien Harris and rookie Rhamondre Stevenson, are both in the concussion protocol. Harris has been solid all season long, netting six touchdowns in his last five games, while Stevenson is coming off a breakout effort, rushing for 62 yards on 10 carries while also chipping in 44 receiving yards on two catches. Brandon Bolden and J.J. Taylor are the other backs on the 53-man roster in New England. The Browns are 1-4 ATS in their past five in New England.

NFL Week 10 Pick: Patriots

Seattle Seahawks vs. Green Bay Packers

  • 2021 NFL Week 10 Odds: Green Bay Packers -3

Seattle comes out of its bye week desperate for a win at 3-5 but will get superstar Russell Wilson back from a finger injury. Wilson was cleared for a return by Dr. Steve Shin, who operated on the quarterback’s right middle finger on Oct. 8. The surgery was to repair a tendon rupture (mallet finger) and a fracture-dislocation.

That injury landed Wilson on injured reserve for the first time and snapped his streak of 149 consecutive starts to begin his career. The Seahawks went 1-2 in the three games Geno Smith started in Wilson’s absence. Over Wilson’s career, Seattle is 4-0 at home versus the Packers in Seattle and 0-4 at Lambeau Field, including playoffs.

Will Green Bay have star QB Aaron Rodgers? He missed Week 9 in COVID protocols but is eligible to clear those on Saturday, assuming he’s not showing symptoms. Rodgers said there is a “small possibility” he won’t play against the Seahawks. “I think there’s a possibility, but small possibility,” Rodgers continued, claiming the “health hurdle” may be hard for him to overcome in time for Sunday’s game. He also said he has to be tested to see how his heart responds to heavy work but has been “doing some walking and yoga” while away.

Could Sunday be the Packers debut of Odell Beckham Jr. The former Pro Bowl receiver cleared waivers and will sign with a team this week. Reportedly, his No. 1 choice is Green Bay. Seattle is also on his short list.

NFL Week 10 Pick: Packers as long as Rodgers plays.
