The competition wraps up qualifying this week, and the groups will be constructed before this weekend. A total of 32 teams will be split up into groups of four with only the top two teams in each group getting a knockout stage spot. The draw divides 32 teams into eight groups of four. UEFA takes charge of the selection process and picks one team from each of four pots to construct each group.
The first pot features defending Champions League winners and Europa League title winners, including the reigning league champions from each of the top six club football leagues. Since Real Madrid claimed the most recent La Liga title and are the current title holders, the Pot 1 spot supposedly reserved for the Spanish champions is assigned to the next best nation in the coefficient list, which is the Netherlands and its reigning Eredivisie champion Ajax.
For the succeeding Pots, these are established on the UEFA club coefficient list. It employs a formula to evaluate a club’s performance in both domestic and continental competitions recorded in the last five years.
2022-23 UEFA Champions League group stage draw teams
All clubs hold a unique coefficient ranking that comes into play during the 2022-23 UEFA Champions League Draw process. Each team is included for Pots 2-4 since club seeding in these pots is determined by ranking. Marseille still has a shot at making Pot 4 depending on their playoff results.
Here’s an overview of the teams in each Pot:
- Pot 1: Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, Manchester City, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, PSG, Porto, Ajax
- Pot 2: Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, RB Leipzig, Tottenham
- Pot 3: Borussia Dortmund, RB Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Napoli, Sporting CP, Bayer Leverkusen, Olympique Marseille
- Pot 4: Club Brugge, Celtic, Maccabi Haifa or Red Star, FC Copenhagen or Trabzonspor, Bodo.Glimt or Dinamo Zagreb, Qarabag or Viktoria Plzen, Rangers or PSV Eindhoven, Dynamo Kyiv or Benfica
A club is selected from each pot to cook up the eight groups. Clubs coming from the same league cannot be drawn into the same group. In cases like this, the team must be moved to the next available group.
