By Hank Blaine

All eyes are on the Duke Blue Devils over in the Atlantic Coast Conference, as this is the final year of legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s stint for the program. However, that shouldn’t take away from the rest of the conference’s chances of spoiling Duke’s going-out party for Coach K in the ACC Tournament.

This time, let’s take a quick look back to find out which team won the 2021 NCAA men’s basketball national tournament, as well as odds and comparisons to the current favorites to win this year’s edition of March Madness.

Duke Blue Devils

A seven-game win streak has the Duke Blue Devils riding high at the tail-end of the 2021-22 season, with just one game remaining. Head coach Mike Krzyzewski has been at the helm of the program in Durham for over four decades and are in line to win their 16th conference championship under Coach K and third since 2017.

A core of talented young players consisting of standout freshman Paolo Banchero (16.7 PPG, 8.4 RPG) along with fellow big men Wendell Moore Jr. and Mark Williams round out the cast of this season’s stellar Blue Devils unit. As the only ranked team in the ACC and having plenty of inspiration for its departing leader, No. 4 Duke has a clear advantage in its bid for the conference title compared to its peers.

North Carolina Tar Heels

Duke’s long-time rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels, remain hot towards the end of the season themselves by winning 10 of their last 12 games and possibly giving a Krzyzewski-led Blue Devils squad one more blockbuster clash for the ACC title ahead.

UNC already went through the painful process of parting with its own legendary coach in Roy Williams last season, but that did not deter the team from carrying on its winning culture this season. First-year HC Hubert Davis has done a fantastic job leading the Tar Heels to a 22-8 record to date (14-5 in the ACC) and will wrap up the 2021-22 regular season with a pivotal clash against none other than the Blue Devils on March 5.

Sleepers

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

After going on a blistering 11-1 start to their campaign, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons have cooled off quite significantly down the stretch, losing three of their last five games as of this writing. A couple of those defeats were close affairs against Duke and Miami, but the shocking rout at the hands of Clemson is quite inexcusable.

However, Wake Forest did recover rather soundly in their last outing, with a 22-point demolition of Louisville. With a date against lowly NC State to close out the season, the Demon Deacons should be in higher spirits come the ACC Tournament, as well as a tough out in what’ll likely be the school’s first trip to The Big Dance since a one-and-done First Four appearance in 2017.

Virginia Tech Hokies

After Duke and North Carolina, the Virginia Tech Hokies are the next hottest team in the ACC entering their final game of the season, winning each of their last three games and nine of their last 10. Unfortunately, the team is just 0-3 against Duke and UNC this season, with its latest loss to the Tar Heels being the one that snapped the team’s prior six-game win streak.

Nevertheless, senior forward Keve Aluma is having quite a final run in Blacksburg and could single-handedly carry the Hokies to their first conference title since being part of the MCAC in 1979. Aluma is averaging 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season whilst shooting an efficient 53.5 percent from the field.
