2021 F1 Azerbaijan GP & 2022 Monaco GP Recap

At the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, 2022 race favorite Max Verstappen suffered a tire failure and then got into an accident. But although Verstappen failed to step to the podium, teammate Sergio Perez did. Perez won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last year. Second place went to Sebastian Vettel while Pierre Gasly crossed the finish line in third.

2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Picks

Top Pick to Win the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Before the Monaco Grand Prix, the race before this, Max Verstappen had been on a roll. The Red Bull driver had won 3 straight and 4-of-6. Verstappen raced well at Monaco, crossing the finish line third and grabbing a podium spot. Sergio Perez won the Monaco GP followed by Carlos Sainz. On Sunday, there’s a good chance Verstappen turns the tables on his teammate.

The defending F1 Driver Champion won’t again settle for third. Expect Verstappen to get into a good position early and then to be in a great position to take the checkered flag.

Second Pick to Win the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc’s form has fallen off some. After starting the Formula 1 season winning 2 of the first 3 races, Leclerc has since lost 4 straight.

At Monaco, Charles finished fourth behind Perez, Sainz Jr., and Verstappen. But although Leclerc has hit a rough patch, there’s reason to believe he steps it up on Sunday. The Ferrari driver won the the pole at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He ended up fourth, but he and his crew weren’t nearly as formidable last season as they are this season. Leclerc is the top play.

Third Pick to Win the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Sergio Perez could do something rare, beat Sainz, Verstappen, and Leclerc in two straight. Perez’s victory at Monaco was huge. Going back-to-back would be massive. Before writing Sergio off, don’t forget that he won the 2021 F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. So Perez likes driving over the track. If the top two falter, Sergio should once again be there to pick up the pieces. A second straight F1 win is not out of the question.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Russell continues to prove that he’s Mercedes’ top driver. At Monaco, the +2200 underdog finished fifth. Teammate Lewis Hamilton finished eighth. Eventually, George Russell is going to break through with a win. He could do so on Sunday. Perez beat the top choices at Monaco. Why couldn’t Russel beat the top choices at Azerbaijan? The odds are fair on a driver that has become on of the best at Formula 1. If you believe Russell could get his first victory on Saturday, go for it.
