By Hank Blaine

For the first time in history, the Genesis Scottish Open will list as both a European Tour event and a PGA event. Last year, and every year before, the Scottish Open was a European Tour tournament. This year, because it’s also a PGA Tournament, more PGA Tour players have entered than last year. Check out a recap of the 2021 Scottish Open and picks for this week’s top PGA Tour contest.

2021 Barbasol Championship Recap

Seamus Power and J.T. Poston played to a -21 tie. Power outplayed Poston in the playoff to take the win. Anirban Lahiri and Sam Ryder finished tied for second after shooting a -20. Patrick Rodgers, Henrik Norlander, Ryan Armour, Mito Pereira, James Hahn, and Luke List all finished at -19. Four players tied at -18: Taylor Pendrith, Bo Hoag, David Lingmerth, and Joseph Bramlett.

Top Pick to Win the 2022 Barbasol Championship

Chris Gotterup didn’t play in last year’s Barbasol Championship, but that’s okay. He is still the top choice to win this year’s event. Even though he’s the chalk, and we never like betting on chalk, he’s the best golfer to back.

Gotterup finished a tied seventh at the Puerto Rico Open, a tied forty-three at the U.S. Open, which isn’t bad considering the talent at major PGA Tournaments, and a tied thirty-fifth at the Travelers Championship. Last week, he finished a tied fourth at the John Deere Classic. Gotterup should put it all together at a course he can dominate. Give the favorite a big edge.

Second Top Pick to Win the 2022 Barbasol Championship

Taylor Pendrith was oh so close to winning the 2021 PGA Barbasol Championship. The 31-year-old Canadian finished 3 strokes off Power and Poston after shooting a 65-68-69-68 270. The +2500 opening odds choice hasn’t played a PGA event since The Players Championship in March.

At that golf tournament, Pendrith shot a 68-71-71-69 to finished tied for thirteenth. If he can repeat that effort here, he’ll be in the mix for sure. The course at Keen Trace isn’t close as challenging as TPC Sawgrass.

If he gets off to a good start, he can win for sure. The favorite offers fair odds. So if you like Rahm to bounce back from the U.S. Open meltdown, you won’t have to back him at an underlay number.

Third Top Pick to Win the 2022 Barbasol Championship

Adam Svensson is another pick that didn’t tee off at last year’s Barbasol Championship. But Svensson is playing decent golf. Adam has clocked three top 25 finishes in his last 3 tournaments played. Svensson stepped off the course at the RBC Canadien Open a tied twenty-first. He shot a 71-64-66-71 at the Travelers Championship on his way to a tied twenty-fifth. At the John Deere Classic last week, Svensson finished a tied twenty-fourth.

The top 25 finishes at more challenging courses will give Adam Svensson confidence. The odds are fair. So if you like Svensson’s chances, don’t hesitate to put him on top.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Barbasol Championship

If this were 2017, Ryan Moore would offer underlay odds. If the old Moore shows up, he’ll dominate this field. But Moore hasn’t played his best golf in recent tournaments. Still, the tied twenty-fourth at the John Deere Classic is enough to make Moore the top underdog play.

After shooting a 72 first round, Moore finished the John Deere by shooting a 64-69-68. Moore should have momentum heading into this. The +4500 odds make the best dog play an overlay.
