Baylor Bears
There were many concerns regarding the No. 3 Baylor Bears’ condition towards the end of the 2021-22 regular season, considering several injuries dealt to their key players. However, the defending national champs have not faltered of late, winning four straight as of this writing, including a huge victory over Kansas a few days ago.
Head Coach Scott Drew has done another fantastic job of weathering the storm for Baylor, which possesses one of the stoutest defenses in the nation. The Bears are allowing just 63.2 points per game this season, and that’s not even taking into account that they’re pitted in a stacked Big 12 scene.
Kansas Jayhawks
Speaking of the Kansas Jayhawks, their window for finishing the regular season with a better record than Baylor is starting to close, as back-to-back 10-point defeats to the Bears and the unlikely TCU Horned Frogs bump them down to half a game behind Baylor for the top spot in the conference and an AP ranking of No. 6.
Nonetheless, senior guard Ochai Agbaji (20.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 49.0 FG%) is still having a final run in Lawrence to remember to carry the Jayhawks back to the summit before it’s too late. Kansas has a rematch against TCU and a final date against Texas (more on the Longhorns up next) to close out the season and with these winnable games hopefully giving the team some momentum heading into the Big 12 tourney.
Sleepers
Texas Longhorns
Monday’s seven-point loss to Baylor was certainly a heartbreaker for the Texas Longhorns, who are now out of contention for the best regular-season record in the Big 12 due to that defeat and with the team now three games behind the Bears with two games left.
Still, the Longhorns are a respectable 3-4 over their last seven games against ranked opponents, including a tense win over the Jayhawks back in early February. Texas will face Kansas once more in the team’s season finale on March 5, and a season sweep of the Jayhawks will likely dictate the Longhorns’ real chances of coming out on top of the Big 12 Tournament ahead.
Iowa State Cyclones
It’s been a wild final stretch this season for the Iowa State Cyclones, who’ve seen the highest of highs and lowest of lows lately. Their four-game win streak is a testament to their tenacity despite a slew of injuries, but Wednesday’s embarrassing 53-36 loss to Oklahoma State is far from a good look.
There’s only one game that truly matters right now for the Cyclones, and that’s their regular-season finale against Baylor. Iowa State lost by just five points the last time these two teams met, and a win over the Bears on Saturday will go a long way towards boosting Iowa State’s value as a noteworthy sleeper pick to win the Big 12 title against all odds.
