2022 British Grand Prix Sleeper Picks

By Carlos Chacon

After a weekend in Canada, the Formula 1 season returns to Europe for the 2022 British Grand Prix. Silverstone is home to several drivers this season, including seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, his Mercedes teammate George Russell, and McLaren driver Lando Norris.

Defending champion Max Verstappen widens the gap between him and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc following a huge victory in Montreal. The Belgian-Dutch driver stretches his lead to 46 points over teammate Sergio Perez and 49 points over the Monegasque competitor.

However, the recent starting grid proved that more unpredictable scenarios will come. Alpine’s Fernando Alonso started the race at P2 behind Max Verstappen. George Russell continues a consistent streak of finishing P5 or better after an incredible drive that saw him secure another top-five finish this season. The pair of Alfa Romeos finished within the top ten at P7 and P8.

The list of exciting storylines goes on. With that, Nitrobetting lays eyes on the top three 2022 British Grand Prix sleeper picks.

Lewis Hamilton

  • 2022 British Grand Prix Odds: +1400

Hamilton is the most successful racing driver in the British Grand Prix. He holds eight wins, winning seven of the last eight runs of the event. Although we’ve seen a significant decline in his performance since last season, mainly because of the new regulations and the next generation of cars, we still see enough of a competitive edge from him.

Mercedes’ Silver Arrows is a hit or miss so far for the 37-year-old. He struggled to keep pace with Max Verstappen, let alone keep up with the Scuderia. Porpoising issues continue to linger, but team principal Toto Wolff reaffirmed that his engineers edge closer to solving the said concern.

The Englishman operates well within familiar territory. His odds might sit behind both Red Bulls and Ferraris at +1400, but he wields enough experience to pressure the favorites. Hamilton is virtually unbeatable on home soil looking at statistics alone, and having supporters cheering him on each lap could push him closer to a first 2022 victory.

George Russell

  • 2022 British Grand Prix Odds: +1400

Don’t leave Russell out of consideration. Mr. Consistency finds ways to keep his car inside the top five. His streak keeps going after scoring his second P3 of the season despite Mercedes’ car struggles. The youngster does an amazing job maximizing his car’s reliability. Even though pace is a looming subject for the German Formula 1 team, it’s amazing how Russell keeps them within striking distance. After his Canadian GP P4 finish, George cut down Leclerc and Perez’s lead to 15 and 18 points, respectively.

We are yet to see the ex-Williams driver put down a lap time at Silverstone with his new car. Nevertheless, we look forward to significant improvements from the 24-year-old next weekend.

In an interview with Russell recently, he said “I’d like to think the high-speed nature should suit us slightly more, but there are no guarantees, every single track we’ve gone to, it’s sort of thrown an unknown at us.”

Having that indeterminate element makes him a perfect sleeper pick for the race. We’ve seen him deliver results, and it’s only a matter of time before we see Russell standing on the podium this season.

Lando Norris

  • 2022 British Grand Prix Odds: +12500

Another British driver lining up for a home race next weekend is up-and-coming driver Lando Norris. Talent is not a question for this youngster. What holds him back from scoring more points and podium finishes is a mediocre car. He came close to a victory in Sochi last season, but a bad call late into the race robbed him of his first Grand Prix win.

Norris already bagged a P3 finish this season at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, followed by a handful of top-five appearances. The inconsistencies will likely straighten out as McLaren irons out the car’s quirks towards the first half of the calendar.

Like Mercedes, McLaren is in a constant battle with the 2022 cars. They haven’t matched the pace of Mercedes just yet, or even the Alfa Romeo duo in the Canadian GP, but once the team finds its footing we can expect more competitive numbers coming from Norris and even Daniel Ricciardo.
