Starting on March 8, the top teams in college basketball throw down in their individual conference tournaments. Winning a conference tournament means an automatic bid. For the teams who have already secured bids to the NCAA Tournament, a conference championship means a high seed in the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament. ACC Conference
At first glance, it looks like Virginia, or Wake Forest, or Notre Dame, or even North Carolina can win the ACC Touranment. But after studying those teams, and then remembering that this is Coach K’s final season, nobody can look past Duke.
The Blue Devils are a couple of games away, at Pitt on March 1 and versus North Carolina on March 5, from finishing the regular season with a 27-4 record. Duke is the best team in the ACC and will show it once the conf. tournament starts.
Big East Conference
Providence will finish the season with a better record, but the Friars didn’t play much outside of their conference. Not only that, Big East Conference Tournament time is when Jay Wright gets his squad to excel. Wright believes he has a Final Four team. If he’s right, there’s no way Villanova loses the Big East Tournament.
Big Ten Conference
Purdue, Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State, and even Michigan are good enough to win the Big Ten Tournament. But the Wisconsin Badgers have something that those teams don’t, Jonathan Davis.
The 6’ 5” guard from La Crosse averages 20.5 points and 8.3 boards per game. Davis also leads the Badgers in assists per game, 2.3. Tyler Wahl shoots over 52% from the field. So if you try and stop Davis, he will send the ball to Wahl. Davis and Wahl will lead the Badgers to a Big Ten Conference Tournament title.
Big 12 Conference
The Big 12 is loaded. At least four teams from the Big 12, Kansas, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Texas, should grab 1-seeds through 3-seeds. Other teams like TCU and Iowa State, could end up with 7-seeds to 10-seeds.
So the Bears aren’t a lock to win the Big 12 Conference Tournament. But Baylor beat Kansas 80-70 on Feb. 26. The Bears should beat Texas and Iowa State in their final two regular season games, which means they’ll have momentum heading into the conference tournament.
Pac-12 Conference
This past Saturday, Colorado blasted Arizona 79-63. The Wildcats are better than what they showed. So don’t be surprised when the Cats pick it up in their final 3 regular season games versus USC, Stanford, and Cal, and then dominate their opponents in the Pac-12 Conference Touranment.
