2022 FIFA World Cup Group B Preview

By Jeff Stinger

Group B is a central talking point as we draw closer to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. First and foremost, England is one of the favorites to win the tournament even though they missed out at the Euros two years ago. Wales barely got past Ukraine in the playoff but remains the second-best team in the group, while the United States is a solid sleeper pick. With this in mind, Nitrobetting goes over some of the main points of the pool.

England

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: -333

The Three Lions are the team to beat in this group. After winning the World Cup in 1966, England hasn’t seen much success in the tournament. However, the nation stretched its 2018 FIFA World Cup run to a fourth-place finish. Gareth Southgate needs to go a step further to make sure his squad reaches the final this time around. The 52-year-old manager introduced a supportive system and quick tactical reactions that lifted the spirits of England and the squad itself.

Team captain Harry Kane makes his second World Cup appearance after bagging the Golden Boot award last time, scoring six goals in the process. Of course, the run of play doesn’t only revolve around the Tottenham striker. Their prominent names could make the starting 11, including Jordan Pickford, Harry Maguire, and John Stones. These three play a role in keeping the ball out of their net. Midfield duties go to Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, and Jack Grealish. Meanwhile, Kane is expected to create an attacking duo with Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling.

Wales

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: +550

The trend has been positive for Wales since making waves in the UEFA European Championship in 2016. The Dragons reached the semi-finals of the tournament in 2016 despite making only two appearances in the event. Questions surround the team since Rob Page took over coaching duties in 2020. He is yet to make a mark as significant as Chris Coleman, but the 2022 World Cup qualification campaign sets the team off in the right direction.

Wales’ top scorer and former Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale is an important figure here. We expect his work to link up with Nice player Aaron Ramsey. The duo played a huge role in helping Wales reach their first World Cup since 1958. Furthermore, younger players such as Brennan Johnson, Nathan Broadhead, and Neco Williams are now in the mix. The 26-man squad looks tighter than ever, and the small European nation is a good pick if you’re looking for a team to advance to the knockout stage.

USA

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: +600

The Stars and Stripes are regulars at the tournament. There’s no question that Christian Pulisic plays a pivotal role in the team if they make it past the group stage. The 23-year-old Chelsea star will lead the young squad in his first major international tournament.

We look forward to an interesting lineup with head coach Gregg Berhalter taking a different route. Expect younger talent to take the stage as opposed to previous line-ups that made veteran players the focal point.

It’s been a while since the USA found success in the World Cup. Team USA secured a third-place finish in 1930, and after ten more appearances, The Yanks consistently had a difficult time making it out of the group stage. However, the nation presents an impressive portfolio outside of the World Cup. They recently won their seventh CONCACAF Gold Cup title in 2021. In addition, the U.S national soccer team finished runners-up in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Iran

2022 FIFA World Cup odds: +1,100

Other than the host nation, the fan support for Iran is likely to be off the charts. Traveling fans can anticipate a more motivated team than the usual defensive mindset brought by coach Carlos Queiroz in the 2014 and 2018 World Cup. Since taking over coaching duties in 2020, former Croatian professional player Dragan Skočić injected a more balanced outlet.

Iran is the highest-ranked team seeded in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. They became the 13th team to qualify for the tournament following a narrow 1-0 victory over Iraq in January 2022. After a good qualifying campaign, the squad looked to have more quality in its roster and style of play. Bayer Leverkusen’s Sardar Azmoun and Porto’s Mehdi Taremi are noticeable talents running the squad. That said, Iran has a good chance to fight for second place in Group B.
