Two Asian nations exit the 2022 FIFA World Cup Round of 16. Japan was the first to exit the competition after a closely contested clash against Croatia, while Brazilians showed their dominance and set home the persistent South Korean squad in a 4-1 final score. This means we’re about to wrap up the quarter-final picture soon. But before all that, let’s look back at how Croatia and Brazil earned their way to the next stage of the competition.

Japan makes it tough for the Croatians

Japan and Croatia faced off in the first knockout phase of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The first half was off to a slow start but Japan’s relentless pace showed when Daizen Maeda scored the first goal in the 43rd minute. Croatia would then have an answer in the second half thanks to Ivan Perisic who leveled the score in the 55th minute. The game would stretch to 1-1 until stoppage time of the second half. This meant both sides would have their chances for another 30 minutes, but the score stayed put.

The game called for a penalty shootout. This is where Croatia’s experience showed up. Dominik Livakovic rose to the occasion and denied three Japanese penalties becoming just the third goalkeeper to do that. It was a rough ending for the head coach Hajime Moriyasu and his squad, but something the Blue Samurai could be proud of.

With that knockout game rounded up, Croatia moves on to the quarter-final leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and takes on Brazil as +762 underdogs.

Brazil quickly puts the hammer down against South Korea

Tournament favorites Brazil and underdogs South Korea squared off in the knockout stage, but it was a different storyline for the Asian team this time. Brazil put the pedal to the metal from the opening whistle. Vinicius Junior got things going with a seventh-minute goal. Richarlison was fouled in the box, leading to a Neymar penalty kick in the 13th minute. Although the Group H runners-up kept going, Richarlison would send the knockout blow in the 29th minute, while Lucas Paqueta sealed the deal in the 36th minute. It was a barrage of goals from the +200 tournament winners.

Meanwhile, South Korea would hit back and show some life following a Paik Seung-Ho screamer from outside the box. Brazil would win the contest 4-1 and advance to the quarterfinals for the eighth consecutive World Cup. They face Croatia as -238 favorites to win the matchup.
