2021 PGA Fortinet Championship Recap
Max Homa, this year’s favorite, shot a -19 to beat Maverick McNealy by a stroke. McNealy finished second at -18. Mito Pereira grabbed third place money at -16.
Two golfers finished in a tie for fourth at -15, Marc Leishman and Talor Gooch. Five golfers: Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Rodgers, John Augenstein, C.T. Pan, and Scott Stallings all finished at -13.
Top Pick to Win the 2022 Fortinet Championship
It’s rare that we pick a favorite on top. But Max Homa played lights out in this tournament last season. Max shot a 62 first round and 65 in round 3 and round 4 on his way to the win. Last season, Homa played well.
Not only did Max lift the Fortinet Championship trophy, but he also won the Wells Fargo Championship in May this year and finished fifth at the Tour Championship in August. Homa is gearing up for a big 2022-2023 season. A win would get him off to a great start.
Second Top Pick to Win the 2022 Fortinet Championship
Hideki Matsuyama’s -13 at the 2021 Fortinet Championship put him in the running for the title. Matsuyama shot his best round on Sunday, signing his name under a 66, but the 69s he posted in the first two rounds and a 71 third round kept him at a 6 stroke distance from Homa.
Last season, Matsuyama played well, but it wasn’t close to his 2020-2021 season. Matsuyama won the Zozo Championship and that was it. But Hideki played great at the Tour Championship in August, finishing a tied eleventh. If Matsuyama shows up to the Silverado Resort with his best swing, he’ll be tough to beat.
Third Top Pick to Win the 2022 Fortinet Championship
Sahith Theegala didn’t come close to Homa at last year’s Fortinet. Sahith finished a tied forty-seventh after shooting a 69-70-69-75. The fourth round implosion ended any shot Theegala had of finishing in the top 20.
Last season, Theegala played well. He didn’t win a tournament, but he finished in the top 30 at the Tour Championship, third at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, third at the Memorial Tournament, and second at the Travelers Championship. Sahith believes 2022-2023 will be his season. At the odds, Theegala is a must to consider.
Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Fortinet Championship
Montgomery didn’t play in last year’s Fortinet Championship. The reason is that Taylor transitioned to the PGA Tour just this season. Last season, he played in lower level tournaments like the Price Cutter Charity and the Advent Health Championship. But just because this is Montgomery’s first season on the Tour, it doesn’t mean he has no shot to win the Fortinet trophy.
Taylor averaged a 68 for each round. Even though he played in lower level tourneys, he finished in the top 10 nine times. Montgomery can shock his PGA Tour buddies this week. Give the top underdog a look.
