2022 Geico 500 NASCAR Odds, Preview, and Prediction

By Hank Blaine

The NASCAR Cup Series starts a two-week stretch in Virginia on Sunday with the Toyota Owners 400 from Richmond Raceway with Chase Elliott the betting favorite. The series will go to Martinsville next week and return to Richmond in August as well.

Richmond Raceway, known as America’s Premier Short Track, is a ¾-mile oval with 14 degrees banking in turns, eight degrees at the starting line on a 1,290-foot front stretch and two degrees on 860-foot back stretch. The race itself is 300 miles, but it’s called the Toyota Owners 400 because it’s 400 laps. This will be the first points race of the new season at a short track in the Next Gen car.

Top Choice to Win the 2022 Geico 500

On April 17, William Byron finished eighteen at Bristol. But before the finish at Bristol, William had won at Martinsville and finished third at Richmond. He also won at Atlanta on March 20. Byron has finished worse than eighteen just twice this year and both races happened early. So far, William Byron is the most consistent driver at NASCAR. In last year’s GEICO 500, Byron crossed the finish line second behind Keselowski. He can win this at excellent odds.

Second Top Choice to Win the 2022 Geico 500

Denny Hamlin won the pole in last year’s event. The Joe Gibbs driver finished thirty-second. But the fact he won the pole at last year’s race means he should drive well on Sunday. So far, Hamlin hasn’t had the greatest season. But he’s more than capable of turning it on at a moment’s notice. If Hamlin again wins the pole at the 2022 GEICO 500, he can parlay that into a checkered flag victory.

Third Top Choice to Win the 2022 Geico 500

Kevin Harvick bombed in Bristol. However, the race was over the dirt. So there’s no telling how Kevin may have driven if the race happened over asphalt. In any case, Harvick finished fourth in the 2021 GEICO 500. At the odds, he’s worth a look for sure. Like Hamlin, Harvick can turn the switch and cross the finish line first on Sunday.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Geico 500

The odds make Michael McDowell an overlay choice. There is no way McDowell should offer 50-to-1 odds to win the GEICO 500. In last week’s race, over the dirt at Bristol, McDowell started seventeenth and moved his way up to ninth. In this event last year, McDowell finished third behind Keselowski and Byron. So the top underdog is driving well and heads to a race where he had much success. Expect Michael McDowell to push for at least a top five finish. If things break his way, he could win. So he offers a ton of value at +5000 odds.
