2021 PGA John Deere Classic Recap
Lucas Glover won last year’s John Deere Classic by 2 strokes over Ryan Moore. Glover shot a – 19. Moore shot a -17. Co-second choice went to LIV Golf player Kevin Na. Four golfers were tied for fourth at -16: Adam Schenk, Luke List, Scott Brown, and Sebastian Munoz.
Top Pick to Win the 2022 John Deere Classic
Although Sahith Theegala didn’t play at last year’s tournament, few of the top golfers from the 2021 John Deere Classic will tee off in this year’s event. So Theegala is as good of a play to lift the trophy as any.
First, the odds are terrific. Sahith offers much better odds than the chalk, Simpson, or the second choice, Hadwin. Second, the 24-year-old Pepperdine grad played great last week when finishing tied for second and 2 strokes behind winner Xander Schauffele at the Travelers Championship.
The finish was Theegala’s second in the top five in his last three tournaments played. Give the third choice on the board a huge shot to win the John Deere Classic.
Second Top Pick to Win the 2022 John Deere Classic
Like Theegala, Webb Simpson didn’t tee off at last year’s John Deere Classic. Simpson is the favorite to win this year’s John Deere because he’s playing well and he’s the most well-known contender. Webb finished tied for thirteenth at last week’s Travelers Championship. Simpson shot a -10, 9 strokes off Schauffele.
Even though he missed the cut at the U.S. Open, Simpson finished tied for twentieth at the PGA Championship. Webb is playing well enough to win the John Deere. But the odds aren’t close to what they should be before placing Simpson ahead of Theegala./p>
Third Top Pick to Win the 2022 John Deere Classic
At the 2021 John Deere Classic, McCarthy missed the cut. He didn’t play terrible golf on Thursday and Friday, shooting a -1, but it wasn’t good enough. This year’s field is much different than last year’s. The expectation is that in this field, McCarthy not only makes the cut, but he also finishes near the top of the standings.
The third choice missed the cut at the Travelers. But before that, he finished a tied fifth at the Memorial Tournament and a tied seventh at the U.S. Open. Denny could get it done at a decent price.
Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 John Deere Classic
If we study Adam Schenk’s recent form, it looks like he has no shot of winning this. Shenk missed the cut at the Travelers, finished tied for twenty-fourth at the U.S. Open, finished tied for twenty-sixth at the Memorial and missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Schenk, though, can turn it around at TPC Deere Run. In last year’s tournament, he shot a -16, just 3 strokes off Glover’s -19.
Shenk knows the course and if we throw out the two missed cuts in his last four played, we can make a case for Adam to lift the hardware on Sunday. He’s a much better play than the odds imply.
