North Carolina Tar Heels
21-8 North Carolina is third in the ACC. UNC finishes their season with games against Syracuse and Duke. If the Orange upset the Tar Heels, North Carolina ends up taking a bid to the NIT. But if the Heels beat Syracuse, they should make the field no matter if Duke beats them on March 5 and if they fail in the ACC Tournament.
In or Out: In
Loyola Chicago Ramblers
The Rambler are 22-7. The record itself won’t be enough for the Ramblers to make it to the Big Dance. Loyola has lost to Drake twice, Missouri State, Bradley, and Northern Iowa. So the Ramblers’ aren’t a lock to grab a bid. But Loyola Chicago should win the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. With a conference tournament victory, the Ramblers will earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
In or Out: In
Oregon Ducks
Outside of Arizona, UCLA, and USC, the Pac-12 has been a disappointment. No team from the Pac deserves an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament other than those three teams. The Ducks, even though they swept UCLA and beat USC, has too many losses to suspect teams, Arizona State beat them twice and they dropped a game to Stanford, to garner an at-large bid. So Oregon must win the Pac-12 Conference Tournament, which won’t happen because Arizona, UCLA, or USC will cut down the nets.
In or Out: Out
Virginia Cavaliers
This one’s tough. The Cavaliers have quality wins over the Miami Hurricanes twice and Duke, but they’ve lost 12 this season. Some of the losses were downright embarrassing, like 67-47 to Houston, 66-58 to Navy, and 52-49 versus James Madison. There just isn’t enough on the resume for the Cavaliers to grab an at-large bid. Like Oregon in the Pac-12, Virginia must hope for an ACC Touranment victory to secure a spot in the NCAA Touranment.
In or Out: Out
Michigan Wolverines
Even before Juwan Howard punched a Wisconsin coach after a loss, the Wolverines’ bubble was about to burst. Since the incident, Michigan has beaten Rutgers and lost to Illinois. The now 15-12 Wolverines could end up finishing the season with a 15-15 record. Beating Michigan State, Iowa, and Ohio State in their final 3 games won’t be easy.
Even if Michigan wins out, the Howard incident will make it tough for the Selection Committee to hand them a bid. So the Maize & Blue must win the Big Ten Conference Tournament, which shouldn’t happen, to make it into the March Madness field.
