Dallas Mavericks

  • 2022 NBA Championship Odds: +3300

Thanks to a torrid scoring stretch by sensational Slovenian Luka Doncic, who scored 40 or more points in five of the last 15 games, the Dallas Mavericks have suddenly crept up the West’s standings and are currently fifth in the conference. The Mavericks are now 11 games over .500, with wins in six of their last seven outings despite trading away a fan favorite in Kristaps Porzingis before the trade deadline.

What could be a concern for Dallas moving forward is a possible burnout for Doncic considering his massive output on a nightly basis. The Mavs acquired Spencer Dinwiddie as part of the Porzingis deal to give Luka more time to breathe, but that plan has yet to materialize from what we’ve seen early on.

Los Angeles Clippers

  • 2022 NBA Championship Odds: +5000

Even with serious injuries to their two biggest stars in Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, head coach Tyronn Lue still has the LA Clippers playing at a high level. LA won three of its last four games prior to the All-Star Break, with a massive 15-point upset of the Warriors and a 142-point explosion over the Rockets.

The Clippers are getting a lot out of their younger talent in Terrance Mann and Luke Kennard of late. In the victories over Golden State and Houston mentioned earlier, Mann scored a combined 45 points, whereas Kennard went 8-of-9 from three-point range. With decent depth and sufficient playoff experience from seasons past, the Clips will be another tough out come the postseason.

Minnesota Timberwolves

  • 2022 NBA Championship Odds: +8000

One of the biggest surprises of the season has to be the Minnesota Timberwolves, who have finally clawed themselves out of the league’s basement after years of perpetual rebuilding states. Karl-Anthony Towns, D’Angelo Russell, and Anthony Edwards have gelled together to become a scoring force in the league, as Minnesota currently ranks ninth in offensive rating.

Edwards sprained his ankle prior to the All-Star break, raising some worries about the Wolves’ cohesion after the ASB’s festivities. This will be a proving test for head coach Chris Finch, who has one of the NBA’s youngest teams fast on the rise and cannot stop the momentum with Minny still within striking distance of securing home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
