2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic Recap

A PGA Tournament rarely gets more exciting than last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic finish. Cam Davis, Tony Merritt, and Joaquin Neimann walked off the course each at -18.

Davis won the playoff to take home the trophy. Merritt and Neimann tied for second. Tied for fourth were Alex Noren and Hank Lebioda each at -17. Bubba Watson and Brandon Hagy finished tied for sixth at -16.

Top Pick to Win the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic

At last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, Will Zalatoris shot even, barely making the cut. Will should perform much better in this year’s tournament. Zalatoris played much better over the St. Andrews Links course at The Open Championship than many thought he would. He finished tied for twenty-eighth, but shot a final round 69.

If we go back to the U.S. Open, Zalatoris missed a birdie putt on the eighteenth that would have sent him into a playoff with winner Matt Fitzpatrick. Zalatoris is playing well enough to win this.

Second Top Pick to Win the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Cameron Young didn’t play at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic. But he did play at The Open Championship at St. Andrews and he played great, finishing a lone second behind winner Cameron Smith and a stroke ahead of Rory McIlroy.

Young missed the cut at the U.S. Open. But at the PGA Championship, the +1600 choice finished third. Cameron Young for sure is worth a look.

Third Top Pick to Win the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Like Young, Tony Finau didn’t tee off at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic. But Tony heads into this playing his best golf of the season. Finau didn’t just win the 3M Open, he beat Sungjae Im and Emiliano Grillo by 3 strokes. Finau had been playing great golf before the win.

He finished a tied twenty-eighth at St. Andrews, a tied thirteenth at the Travelers Championship and a lone second at the RBC Canadian Open. The main knock are the odds. But if you don’t mind the low odds, Finau has a big shot to make it two straight tournament victories.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Adam Hadwin shot a 75 second round and a 71 third round at the 3M Open, ending any chance he had of a top 20 finish. But Adam bookended those two mediocre scores with a 68 first round and a 67 fourth round, which means at times he struck the ball well.

Hadwin missed the cut at last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic. He should play much better this year. Hadwin struck the ball well at the U.S. Open, finishing a tied seventh. If he reproduces that performance this week, he can win this.
