By Hank Blaine

Hendrick Motorsports hopes to keep the good times going when YellaWood 500 winner Chase Elliott steps into his race car and drives for 400 miles over the Charlotte Motors Speedway at this Sunday’s Bank of America Roval 400. With the YellaWood victory, Elliott jumped into first place. Is Chase one of the top picks, or should NASCAR handicappers look to play a different driver?

2021 NASCAR South Point 400 Recap

Kyle Larson won the pole but Denny Hamlin won the race. Joe Gibbs’ top driver started sixth on the grid. Chase Elliott followed Hamlin to finish second. Two Gibbs drivers crossed the finish line in third and fourth.

Kyle Busch finished third and Martin Truex Jr. finished fourth. Fifth place went to Ryan Blaney. Tyler Reddick, one of the favorites to win this year’s race, finished sixth.

Top Choice to Win the 2022 South Point 400

In last week’s race, Chase Elliott started ninth, led 30 laps, and then fell all the way back to twentieth. It was a disappointing effort. Truth be told, though, Chase didn’t have to win the event. A spot in the top eight was already assured.

This Sunday, Elliott heads to a track on which he’s had great success. Not only that, but Chase is due after the twentieth over the Charlotte Road Course last Sunday. Chase won at Talladega and finished second at Bristol. He almost always bounces back after a disappointing performance.

Second Top Choice to Win the 2022 South Point 400

Last year’s winner is gearing up for a repeat. Hamlin has a big shot of securing his second straight South Point checkered flag. Denny Hamlin finished thirteenth over Charlotte’s road course. Before Charlotte, Denny had finished fifth at Talladega. No doubt, Denny can win this.

But the odds are too short. If you don’t mind the low odds, go for it because all signs point to Hamlin making a serious run to the trophy.

Third Top Choice to Win the 2022 South Point 400

The Richard Childress Racing driver finished a decent eighth at the Charlotte Road Course last Sunday. Reddick not only finished eighth in Charlotte, but won at Texas Motor Speedway three races back.

For sure, Reddick must pick up his game if he hopes to improve upon last season’s sixth place finish. The guess here is that Tyler does. Reddick is another contender handicappers should consider backing to win.

Top Underdog Choice to Win the 2022 South Point 400

Joey finished eighteenth at Charlotte. Before the North Carolina race, he crossed the finish line in twenty-seventh place at Talladega. Logano is due for a decent finish. Joey finished eleventh in this last year. A top ten finish should be the least Joey does. If things break his way, Logano can win this.
