2022 Spanish Grand Prix F1 Odds, Preview, and Prediction

By Hank Blaine

After a week hiatus, the best drivers and teams in Formula One are back at it. On Sunday, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen resumes his rivalry with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc when the two drivers step into their race cars at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix. Max has won two straight, which is why he’s the +100 chalk over Leclerc. Will Ferrari’s best driver turn the tables? Or will Verstappen make it three in a row?

2021 F1 Spanish Grand Prix Recap

In last year’s Spanish GP, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took the checkered flag. Hamilton also qualified for the pole position. Verstappen finished second and Hamilton’s 2021 teammate, Valtteri Bottas, finished third. Leclerc crossed the finish line in fourth. Don’t expect anything close to a repeat of the 2021 Formula One Spanish Grand Prix. This season, Red Bull and Ferrari are dominating.

Is Charles Leclerq a good bet to turn it around versus rival Max Verstappen? Or will Verstappen roll to a third straight win?

Verstappen has won two straight, but Leclerc was close in the last. Although Leclerc failed to step to the podium in the Emilia Romagna, he did finish a decent sixth. In the next race, the inaugural Miami Grand Prix, Leclerc pushed Verstappen and ended up second. Max finished the race less than 4 seconds ahead of Leclerc. Make no mistake, 4 seconds is a lot in an F1 event, but Leclerc can make up the difference. So if you don’t want to back the chalk, then consider putting a few bucks behind Ferrari’s top driver.

Is Sainz a better play over Perez?

Sainz finished third at the Miami Grand Prix, which is one of the reasons he’s favored over Perez. But Perez has as much of a shot of grabbing the third spot as Sainz. At the Emilia Romagna, Perez finished second. Neither should beat Verstappen or Leclerc. But if one does, Sainz or Perez are pretty much even. So if you always go for the option with the higher odds, back Perez. But if you like Sainz, the odds are fair.

Which Mercedes driver is the better play? George Russell or Lewis Hamilton?

Russell finished fourth at the Emilia Romagna. Hamilton finished thirteenth. Russell finished fifth at the Miami GP while Hamilton finished sixth. Although Hamilton could finish ahead of Russell on Sunday, it feels as if Mercedes is expending more effort on Russell. So if you want to back one of the Mercedes drivers to take the checkered flag, Russell looks the better play than Hamilton.

Is there an underdog among Norris, Bottas, Alonso, or Ocon that has any shot of stepping to the podium?

It’s difficult to see any of the huge underdogs even stepping to the podium, much less upsetting Leclerc or Verstappen. But an underdog, a major underdog, wins at least one race per season. So if you believe the Spanish Grand Prix is the race where a massive underdog steals’ Verstappen’s and Leclerc’s thunder, go for it. The problem is that it’s tough to choose which dog to back.

Throw a dart or go for Bottas. The former Mercedes driver finished seventh at Miami and before that finished fifth at the Emilia Romagna. So Bottas has driven well even though, like everyone after the top four choices, he doesn’t have much shot of winning.
