2021 PGA U.S. Open Recap

The 2021 U.S. Open was ultra-competitive. The second place to sixth place finishers were within 4 strokes of winner Jon Rahm. Rahm finished at -6. Louis Oosthuizen finished at -5, followed by Harris English at -3. The players that finished fourth through sixth, Guido Migliozzi, Brooks Koepka, and Collin Morikawa, all finished at -2.

Oosthuizen will tee off at The Country Club. Although Louis is an LIV Golf member, and the PGA has suspended players from teeing off in LIV Golf events and PGA events, the U.S. Open is a major. Major tournaments have different rules than week-to-week PGA contests. So Phil Mickelson, Louis Oosthuizen, Bryce DeChambeau and a few other LIV golfers will play this week. On to the picks!

Top Pick to Win the 2022 U.S. Open

Justin Thomnas was the top choice to win the RBC Canadian Open. He played great, shooting a -15 to finish in third place. Thomas may have won it if Rory hadn’t shot a ridiculous -19 and Tony Finau hadn’t stepped off the course at -17. Thomas won the PGA Championship before missing the cut at the Charles Schwab. The fact he’s back on track makes him one of the top golfers to put some money behind to lift the U.S. Open trophy.

Second Top Pick to Win the 2022 U.S. Open

Scottie Scheffler is playing great golf. He finished eighteenth at the RBC Canadian Open last week. No doubt, Scheffler started trying shots in the fourth-round to prepare for this. Before the RBC Canadian, Scottie finished an excellent second at the Charles Schwab Challenge. Scheffler missed the cut in the last major, the PGA Championship. But based on his Charles Schwab Challenge and RBC Canadian Open performances, Scottie is rounding into the form that led to the Masters victory.

Third Top Pick to Win the 2022 U.S. Open

At first glance, it doesn’t look like Collin Morikawa has any shot to win the U.S. Open. The multiple major champion hasn’t finished better than twenty-sixth in the last four tournaments played. In the last tournament played, the Charles Schwab Challenge, Morikawa finished fortieth after shooting 70-71-70-71. Ah, but Collin, no doubt, is going for the majors this season. He finished sixty-eigth at the Valspar Championship before finishing fifth at the Masters. Morikawa could surprise at decent odds.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2022 U.S. Open

Based on his current form, Max Homa is an overlay. The 31-year-old from Burbank, California, won the Wells Fargo Championship in early May. Homa followed up the Wells Fargo victory with a thirteenth in the PGA Championship. Homa then finished twenty-third at the Charles Schwab and he finished fifth at the Memorial Tournament. Max Homa is playing well enough to warrant a long look. If his sticks are as hot as they were at the Memorial, he’ll have a shot to win the U.S. Open at big odds.
