A Closer Look at the 2023-24 NBA Season Over/Under Favorites

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks headline the board as favorites to win the next NBA Championship title at +350. A 50-win season is likely to happen for a powerhouse starting five as well. Some point out depth issues, but we’re yet to see how new head coach Adrian Griffin handles his rotation moving forward.

It’s crucial that key players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton stay healthy throughout the campaign. With an increasing average age and now becoming one of the oldest teams in the NBA, it’s difficult to avoid injury woes for individual players. Giannis averaged over 63 games per year over the last four seasons, while Middleton is at 57 over the same window. And while Brook Lopez appeared in 78 games and finished last season with stellar stats, he’s pushing 35 years old and needs to protect a back injury from the 2021-22 season.

Nevertheless, it’s tough not to see why the over/under is north of 50 given Damian Lillard’s move. The +2,200 regular season MVP favorite can provide more offensive and more consistent firepower that Jrue Holiday failed to deliver on a more regular basis. This team can maintain continuity, chemistry, and three incredibly talented starters.

Boston Celtics

Marcus Smart departing the Boston Celtics roster ends the iconic trio that produced incredible playoff runs over the years. The guard has been the heart and soul of the +150 2023-24 Eastern Conference winners for years thanks to his playmaking and defensive presence. Replacing him with the injury-prone Kristaps Porzingis is a bit of a gamble on the team’s morale and chemistry. However, the recent introduction of Jrue Holiday provides a buffer for a side that wants to make another championship run after losing to the Nuggets last season.

The Celtics now trail the Milwaukee Bucks as +370 winners and second favorite to win the 2023-24 NBA title. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are still in their prime and it’s easy to see this team winning 50 games or more and fighting for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The only worry for the franchise right now is the Milwaukee Bucks, who recently received a massive upgrade since adding Damian Lillard via trade.

Denver Nuggets

The defending champions are ready to put in the work for next year. It may look odd that the Celtics hold a higher over/under number considering their 2022-23 season, but the Nuggets famously eased their pace for the last few weeks of the previous regular season. Their strength and depth bring them into the top three NBA championship contender talks at +450.

Denver’s strength and depth can easily hit the 50-win mark this season. Regardless of how they approach the next season, if Nikola Jokich, Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray, and Michael Porter Jr. together with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope stay locked in come playoff time, there’s not much to say about their bid as one of the top contenders. More than that, if young bench pieces like Christian Braul or Jalen Pickett step up, the -370 NBA Northwest Division favorites should form another deep playoff run throughout the calendar.

Miami Heat

[get-out-right event=”3128200″]

Other than losing two key starters in Max Strus and Gabe Vincent, the Miami Heat fell out of the Damian Lillard race in the offseason. While the additions of Josh Richardson and Thomas Bryant fill in some of the void, neither player can deliver the level of work Dame offers. But the same thing can be said about the Strus and Vincent duo earlier this year. We know that head coach Erik Spoelstra upholds the Heat’s culture and developmental prowess that proved many doubters wrong.

Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo are the two pillars of Miami’s infrastructure. Their duo from the 2022-23 NBA Finals run went through the wringer. From grinding in the regular season, securing a playoff position through the Play-In, and working their way to the final stage of the competition, we can’t overlook the fruits of their labor. The Heat joins the NBA championship discussion as +2,200 favorites, but they hold conservative over/under figures coming into the season.

Golden State Warriors

Andrew Wiggins’ injury crippled the Warriors’ starting lineup last season, but they were undeniably the best starting five in the league last year. Among lineups with fewer than 100 minutes played, the one featuring Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Wiggins, Kevon Looney, and floor general Draymond Green topped the boards with an average net rating of plus-21.9. Having veteran Chris Paul and +1,700 Sixth Man of the Year favorite come off the bench could add another dimension to their overall look this season.

CP3 should perform well as he can go full gas off the bench. His playmaking ability helps develop younger players like Moses Moody and Jonathan Kuminga. Even if head coach Steve Kerr adds Paul into the starting five from time to time, they can still operate like clockwork with Kerr’s impressive rotation. The Dubs remain in the championship favorites list as +1,155 winners coming into the regular season.
