Karen Khachanov vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas

  • When: Thursday, Jan. 26 at 10:30 pm ET

Khachanov entered the tournament as the 18-seed. He hasn’t played like an 18. The 6’6” Moscow-born player is at the top of his game. Karen’s length is one of the reasons Khachanov is such a difficult out.

Karen has beaten 16-Frances Tiafoe, 31-Yoshihito Nishioka, and 29-Sebastian Korda on his way to the Aussie Open Men’s semis. But it hasn’t been easy. Khachanov has played 10 sets and 3 tiebreaker sets. The win over Tiafoe was brutal because Frances wasn’t giving an inch.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has played and beaten a single seeded player on his way to the semifinals. 15- seed Jannik Sinner pushed Stefanos to 5 sets. In Tsitsipas’ quarterfinals match, Jiri Lehecka forced a tiebreaker in the second.

If Stefanos is on, he wins this. However, there’s no telling which Stefanos Tsitsipas we’re going to get.

Karen Khachanov is a tough dude. Khachanov has learned how to use his length to make up for his tennis abilities. The underdog is also battle-tested in this tournament. At the odds, he’s worth a long look to upset the favored Tsitsipas.

2023 Australian Open Pick: Karen Khachanov

Novak Djokovic -7.5 -127 vs. Tommy Paul +705 +108

  • When: Friday, Jan. 27 at 3:30 am ET

The 25-year-old Paul is one of the United States’ up-and-coming tennis players. He has a lot of skill and never quits. But we should be frank about the situation he faces on Friday morning.

Paul has close to zero shot of upsetting Novak Djokovic. Grit, and even skill, will take you so far versus the player many believe is the greatest of all time.

Djoker is on a mission. The Australian Open banned Novak Djokovic from participating last year because he said he wouldn’t take the shot, the COVID-19 vaccination. From the moment he stepped off the plan, Djokovic dominated.

In the quarterfinals, Djokovic beat 5-seed Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. The game’s difference came out to 11. The line in tomorrow morning’s match is 7.5. Djokovic should handle Paul with room to spare.

Don’t be surprised if Djoker wins 6-2, 6-0, 6-1. Laying the -7.5 on Novak makes sense.

2023 Australian Open Pick: Aryna Sabalenka
