Elena Rybakina vs. Victoria Azarenka
- When: Thursday, Jan. 26 at 3:30 am ET
Veteran Victoria Azarenka is playing excellent tennis. Azarenka beat three of the best U.S. women’s players in the tournament on her way to this show down against Rybakina.
The slight underdog in this matchup started her run to the Aussie Semifinals with a win against Sofia Kenin. In the third round, Azarenka ended Madison Keys’ Australian Open attempt in three sets. Then in the quarterfinals, Victoria beat 3-seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 6-1.
But although the underdog is playing great tennis, she’s up against a rising star on a mission in this. Elena Rybakina is looking for her second major title after scoring a Wimbledon victory last year.
Rybakina has lost a single set in her five victories during the Aussie Open. On her path to the semis, Elena beat 13-Danielle Collins, 1-Iga Swiatek, and 17-Jelena Ostapenko. Rybakina Azarenka’s Australian Open dream.
2023 Australian Open Pick: Elena Rybakina
Magda Linette vs. Aryna Sabalenka
- When: Thursday, Jan. 26 at 5:00 am ET
Underdog Magda Linette is playing the best tennis of her career. Linette has never made it to a major semifinal. In fact, the farthest Linette has ever gone in a major is the third round.
The 30-year-old has a chance to do something she’s never done before. The way Magda got here is inspiring. Linette beat 16-Anett Kontaveit, 19-Eketarina Alexandrova, 4-Caroline Garcia, and 30-Karolina Pliskova.
It’s rare for an unseeded player in a major to take down four seeded players. Magda Linette has already accomplished the feat.
But although Linette is playing excellent tennis. She’s up against it on Thursday. Aryna Sabalenka is playing better than Elena Rybakina.
The 24-year-old has won all five of her Aussie Open matches in straight sets. During the run, Sabalenka has beaten Shelby Rogers, Elise Mertens, Belinda Bencic, and Donna Vekic.
Sabalenka has been in this spot before. In 2021, Aryna made it to the Wimbledon semis. She’s scored trips to the U.S. Open Semifinals in the past two years.
Linette has beaten the better opponents, but this feels like Sabalenka’s time to shine. Aryna has playing great tennis in majors since 2021. Taking the next step, stamping her ticket to a major tournament final, happens in this.
Aryana Sabalenka beats Magda Linette and faces Elena Rybakina in this year’s Australian Open Women’s Singles Final.
2023 Australian Open Pick: Aryna Sabalenka
