Italy
- Odds to win Group A: -133
- NBA players playing for Italy: Simone Fontecchio (Utah Jazz)
Italy locked in another FIBA World Cup appearance for the first time in 1986 and 1990. This is their tenth appearance on the international stage, where they managed fourth place in 1970 and 1978. The Gli Azzurri qualified for the World Cup in the November 2022 window and are the heavy favorites to win Group A.
The European nation currently ranks 13th. But, their performance leads us to believe they can improve the numbers and sneak within the top ten. When Simone Fontecchio starts to fire on all cylinders, we might even see them rank eighth. Coach Gianmarco Pozzecco did wonders for this team and breathed some life into the team. It’s been nearly two decades since their last podium at a major event, and this year could pen new narratives for their new generation of basketball players.
Dominican Republic
- Odds to win Group A: +125
- NBA players playing for Dominican Republic: Karl-Anthony Towns (Minnesota Timberwolves), Chris Duarte (Sacramento Kings), Lester Quinones (Golden State Warriors), Al Horford (Boston Celtics)
The Dominican Republic punched their ticket to the 2023 FIBA World Cup in the final game and returned to the prestigious tournament for the third straight edition and fourth overall. The Dominicans ranked 25th in the world as of November 2022, claimed victory in two games to finish 13th in 2014, and secured two wins in the First Round in 2019 to advance to the Second Round. The Caribbean country holds a team-best result of 12th place in 1978.
This crew bewildered another tournament icon, Argentina, in the final game of the Americas Qualifiers and kept the 2019 runners-up out of this year’s competition. This is also the first time Argentina has missed the tournament since 1982. The Dominican Republic beat that same team on the road, silencing the crowd in Mar del Plata. This squad packs some NBA punch and can deliver incredible moments, similar to Jean Motero’s 61-point record in 60 minutes of playing time in his last three qualifier games.
Philippines
- Odds to win Group A: +1,400
- NBA players playing for Philippines: Jordan Clarkson (Utah Jazz)
Co-hosts Philippines step on the world stage for a sixth time. The last time they finished in the top eight was in 1978, which was also the nation’s first time hosting the tournament. The World No. 40 team participates in the tournament for a third-straight time. Their best finish of the competition came in 1954 where they claimed a podium finish at third.
Furthermore, the hosts prepare for the summer following the team’s announcement of Jordan Clarkson’s addition to the lineup. The Utah Jazz star played a few games with the squad last summer, scoring 27 and 23 points in those two appearances, on top of 6.5 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game. He is expected to play a key role in the upcoming campaign and has the entire nation support them at home.
Angola
- Odds to win Group A: +10,000
- NBA players playing for Angola: N/A
Angola joins the global stage for the ninth time in the last ten FIBA World Cup editions. The nation secured their spot in the final window. They currently rank 41st in the world as of November 2022. Angola twice advanced from the First Round–losing to France in the first knockout stage in 2006 and falling in the hands of the Americans in 2010.
The 11-time AfroBasket winners are expected to face a series of challenges as Group A underdogs. They ranked second in the African Qualifiers Group E and were 2-2 in their first four contests before going on an eight-game winning streak to lock in on a FIBA World Cup spot. Although they hold 29th in the world rankings, this team still packs a punch and can produce surprise results to send someone home early.
