2023 Formula 1 Rookie Lineup

By Jeff Stinger

The Formula 1 season is here, and the pressure is on three rookie drivers this year. The grid looks extra special in 2023 given the lineup changes. Oscar Piastri, Nyck de Vries, and Logan Sargeant enter the picture and prepare for their first year in the motorsport class. On top of that, all three drivers look capable of racing wheel-to-wheel with some of the best. What can we expect from the trio this March?

Oscar Piastri – McLaren

The most anticipated rookie of 2023 has to be Oscar Piastri. Originally backed by Alpine during his early days and was anticipated to take one of the seats of the French constructor this season. But, things turned out differently for the Australian and he eventually secured a contract with McLaren. He went through turbulent moments with Alpine as soon as the news broke out, but the Enstone-based team moved on with an all-French lineup of Esteban Ocon and former AlphaTauri man Pierre Gasly.

At 21 years of age, Piastri has to be quick and keep up with the talented Lando Norris. His Brit teammate already holds more experience in his several years of racing in Formula 1. This amplifies the expectations from Piastri moving forward. All eyes are on Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement right now as the hottest rookie on the grid in 2023.

Zak Brown reiterated his belief in Piastri’s qualities and foundations, the bigger question here is whether he can handle the pressure at McLaren. The papaya-colored team wants to dominate the midfield and work its way up to the front of the pack. For that to happen, he needs both drivers to score points. Piastri enters the season as a +50,000 Drivers’ Championship winner.

Nyck de Vries – AlphaTauri

We’ve seen Nyck de Vries strap up in Formula 1 as Williams’ reserve driver last season. He stepped in for Alex Albon in Italy last year and impressed onlookers with a points-finish debut. The Formula E champion made the jump to Formula 1 in 2023 after impressing AlphaTauri. The Dutchman cemented his name in motorsport through his stellar Formula 2 and Formula E records.

De Vries patiently waited for this opportunity. Due to Albon’s sudden appendectomy, he was given a chance at Williams in the second half of 2022. He did not waste a minute as soon as he drove that Williams last year. The 28-year-old secured ninth position in Monza. It’s also worth noting that he outperformed teammate Nicholas Latifi in the same race.

Nyck immediately skyrocketed his stock value in Formula 1 and earned interest from several teams, including Williams and AlphaTauri. The latter constructor eventually landed him as Pierre Gasly’s replacement. They failed to get past ninth place in the constructors’ standing last season, and this change might be what the team needs to advance. He now forms a duo with Yuki Tsunoda in his rookie year.

More than that, the Uitwellingerga-born racing driver has the ideal character to help dominate the midfield this time. De Vries is also capable of providing feedback without disrupting the team’s atmosphere. He joins the Drivers’ Championship race as a +75,000 winner.

Logan Sargeant – Williams

The announcement of Logan Sargeant joining Williams came in late. His arrival was guaranteed once the departure of Nicholas Latifi was disclosed. The British team needed a revamp after Latifi failed to deliver positive results during his stint with the constructor. De Vries was also an option for the team, but it was soon clear that he would start his Formula 1 career at AlphaTauri. This situation made Sargeant one of the last remaining options.

Sergeant had to patiently wait before getting his seat in the elite motorsport division. The American, who was already Williams’ reserve driver, had to rush to collect points for his super license. It was late into 2022 when the 22-year-old completed his final points to secure his Formula 1 debut in 2023.

As a +100,000 Drivers’ Championship winner, the American is in an interesting position. He is one of the key pieces to break Williams out of its bad spell and poor eight-point season last year. The pressure is on. Nevertheless, things can only get better for them moving forward. With three US Grand Prix races, the fans have a local driver to cheer on this time.
