Houston Cougars
- 2022-23 Season Record: 31-3 (17-1 AAC)
Despite losing in the conference championship finals to Memphis and playing in a relatively weak AAC conference in general, Houston is still widely regarded as a top contender to go the distance in the national tournament. The Cougars won 13 straight games before coming short of winning the AAC title and held their opponents to an average of just a shade under 56 points per game this season. Head coach Kelvin Sampson still has his Cougars mauling through the competition, albeit with most of their experience having come against non-power-five-conference programs.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Recent off-court issues involving Alabama star freshman Brandon Miller casts a dark cloud over the Crimson Tide’s impending March Madness run. However, just in terms of prowess on the courts, ‘Bama is a surefire title contender. The Tide average 82.2 points per game – 10th in the nation – and are second overall in Division I averaging 44.2 rebounds per contest. They also beat the Cougars on their home court earlier this season while also dominating a stacked SEC Conference.
Purdue Boilermakers
Arguably the biggest surprise entry among the four top-seeded teams in Purdue, which secured a No. 1 seed in the national tournament for the first time since 1996. Powered by leading John Wooden Award nominee Zach Edey, who’s averaging nearly 22 points and 13 boards per game, the Boilermakers are in good hands with their star player with an old-school big-man skill set. Throw in some quality wins over Duke, Gonzaga, and Marquette, and Purdue is a compelling No. 1 seed to go all the way in this year’s national tournament.
Kansas Jayhawks
Don’t call the reigning national champions done just yet, as the Jayhawks fared well enough in the regular season to earn a No. 1 seed into the Big Dance. Kansas’ trio of potential All-American Jalen Wilson, sharpshooting freshman Gradey Dick, and standout senior Kevin McCullar Jr., poses a huge threat in the national tournament. The Jayhawks will even get a morale boost heading into the tourney as famed head coach Bill Self is expected to rejoin the team after a sudden health scare.
