2023 Mexican Grand Prix Looming Predictions

By Jeff Stinger

Formula 1 heads south and travels to Mexico City this weekend for the 18th race of the campaign. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is on another hot streak and has won four of the last seven races in Mexico since the track returned to the calendar in 2015. The storylines start to form as drivers suit up. Let’s take a look at the looming predictions for the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix brought to you by the Nitrobetting team.

2023 Mexican Grand Prix Expert Predictions

Verstappen ascendancy

The spot at the Mexico Grand Prix follows a familiar trend over the past few seasons. It includes defending champion Max Verstappen dominating the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for two straight years (2021 and 2022), including another pair of wins in 2017 and 2018. The Belgian-Dutch driver heads into the weekend on the brink of breaking another record. While it has been par for the course to expect the three-time World Champion to break a record every race weekend, this one is one to follow. If the Red Bull driver wins, he breaches his own record for the most wins in a season to 16.

The significance of this record comes to light when looking at the fact that the Formula 1 calendar only had 16 races then. With this new format, the achievements Verstappen reaches will take a lot of effort to surpass. Verstappen is on another hot streak since a disappointing Singapore Grand Prix showing. He quickly bounced back with three consecutive wins, regaining his form in Japan, followed by a P1 finish in Qatar and the United States Grand Prix. Now, he can push things even further by recording another four straight first-place victories as a -312 heavy favorite to win in Mexico.

Lewis out of the shadows

A few drivers look in form and could form compelling storylines. Despite losing his podium finish in the United States Grand Prix due to running the car too low, Mercedes does have the pace to keep up with the frontrunners. It took a while before the constructor returned to this bracket, but had the pace in Austin. An argument can be made that Lewis Hamilton would have won the race if they employed better strategies throughout the race.

Entering the 2023 Mexican Grand Prix, this race offers the best opportunity for the team to win its first race this season. Lewis knows this track like the back of his hand and was the last driver to win the GP before the COVID-19 pandemic. His wins in 2016 and 2019 cement his name among the favorites. Lewis currently sits behind Max at +820 and gets another shot at closing the gap between him and Sergio Perez. He still has a few more chances to take second in the 2023 Driver Standings and close the 39-point deficit by the final race.

Bringing back McLaren

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri had an unlucky weekend at Austin. Meanwhile, teammate Lando Norris was promoted to P2 from P4 after Hamilton and Leclerc’s disqualification. Their recent results brought McLaren up to P4 in the 2023 Constructor Standings. They are now six points ahead of rivals Aston Martin and pack plenty of momentum ahead of the two race weekends in South America.

Lando Norris carried the team last weekend and is a strong contender in Mexico as a +1,600 favorite. Piastri needs to rebound from a poor weekend, but there’s reason to believe that the pair are going to cause issues for new rivals Ferrari and Mercedes. The 2023 Mexican GP offers a similar setting for Piastri. He races around another unfamiliar circuit, and it will be interesting to see how he copes with the upcoming conditions. Nevertheless, there’s still good reason to back him as a +3,400 winner.
