San Francisco Giants over the New York Yankees
Gerrit Cole will get the start for the Yankees. Cole throws strikeouts like there’s no tomorrow. But Gerrit’s ERA in 2022 was 3.50.
If Logan Webb steps to the mound for the Giants, SF will have a real shot of upsetting the Yankees on the road.
Orioles beat the Red Sox at Fenway
If Baltimore beats Boston at Fenway on opening day, nobody should be too surprised. Chris Sale and Corey Kluber, Boston’s top two starters, aren’t close to where they were at their peak.
For the Orioles, Kyle Gibson and Cole Irvin will benefit from team changes. Gibson threw for the Phillies last season. Irvin tossed for the As. Either could surprise.
Washington Nationals upset the Atlanta Braves at home
The ATL starts their quest for a second World Series trophy in the past three seasons on the road. No doubt, Atlanta will be a good team, but the Braves face a decent Washington lineup, one that is improved from last season.
Sure, Stephen Strasburg isn’t at spring training. Josiah Grey or Patrick Corbin could be tough in the first start, though. Also, the Nats are at home, which means the odds will be fantastic.
The Phillies beat the Rangers in Texas
The Rangers project to start Jacob DeGrom or Nathan Eovaldi, meaning Texas will be the chalk versus Philly even though the Rangers face the the defending NL champs.
Philadelphia, though, had a taste of success last season. We shouldn’t expect the Phillies to take a backward step. Aaron Nola is a terrific starter. He’ll have his best stuff working on opening day.
Mets fall to the Marlins in Miami
Mets ace Justin Verlander versus defending Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara should be one of opening day’s most thrilling pitchers’ duels.
Alcantara has the edge because the game happens in Miami. Not only that, but Sandy should get decent run support and the jury is out on NYM’s bullpen once Justin steps off the mound.
Cubs beat the Brewers and Corbin Burnes at home
Corbin Burnes is one of the top pitchers in the National League. However, Milwaukee doesn’t appear to have as strong of a lineup as they did in past seasons.
Veteran Marcus Stroman should have a good outing for the Cubbies. In addition, the bats will benefit from a nice mix of veterans and younger players. The Cubs upset the Brewers in Milwaukee.
