2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Sleepers

By Jeff Stinger

The only guaranteed narrative we expect from this year’s NASCAR season is its unpredictability. With changes made to the cars during the off-season, such as rear-end updates, there is a learning curve teams and drivers have to go through. Just like last year, we anticipate more than ten winners on the list. We saw a total of 19 different winners in the 2022 campaign. This was one of last year’s defining moments, which brought motorsport fans to the edge of their seats.

With an abundant list of possible winners, we check out some of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship sleepers.

Ty Dillon

  • 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Odds: +40000

The 30-year-old pilots the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet for the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series. Dillon is the grandson of NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Childress. He started his professional career in 2014 and bounced between a few teams before securing a contract with Spire. So far, the Lewisville native continues his hunt for a first Cup Series victory, and there’s no better way to win it than emerging from a sleepers list.

With Kevin Bellicourt next to him and a competent team behind him, we expect Dillon to thrive and build chemistry with his teammate. Setting up the car’s chassis, and engine while plotting race strategies are of paramount importance. That makes the Bellicourt-Dillon partnership even more exciting this time. It can be difficult to navigate as an underdog. A proper foundation driver-team foundation is a must, and this is what his current team brings to the table.

Michael McDowell

  • 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Odds: +40000

The veteran driver penned a solid career in 2022. There’s no reason for him not to improve his figures with the NASCAR Gen 7 car in play this time. His 2021 victory in Daytona 500 was an underdog’s dream. Although he failed to deliver in last weekend’s race, it’s worth taking a shot at him in the long run. Since first appearing in the Cup Series in 2008, the Phoenix-born driver scored 29 top-ten finishes on top of his first and only victory two years ago. The No. 34 Front Row Motorsports driver has plenty of experience behind him as well. Mcdowell also has a commendable Xfinity Series career, including 21 top-tens, two poles, and a win.

McDowell might have the odds against him, but he remains on our 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship sleepers list. If he can continue his pace from last season, there’s a good chance we see him work his way up the pack in the not-so-distant future.

Harrison Burton

  • 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship Odds: +50000

The youngster returns for a second season as part of NitroBetting’s 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Championship sleepers list. He drives the legendary No. 21 Wood Brothers’ car after a commendable rookie year when he finished third at Indianapolis. His Xfinity Series career saw him score 49 top-ten finishes and four wins, which should provide him with the right building blocks in the top-tier NASCAR division. So far, Burton holds two top-ten Cup Series finishes since first featuring in the 2021 GEICO 500.

Crew Chief Brian Wilson hopes to guide Burton to his best Cup Series season. While they did underperform at the Daytona 500 and finished in 26th place with only 11 points to bag, the long season ahead offers more opportunities for the 22-year-old.
