Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavs snapped a five-year playoff drought with their recent 17-point victory over the Houston Rockets. J.B. Bickerstaff and his crew continue their stellar run to the postseason since the franchise’s last appearance in 2018. It was also the last year that LeBron James played for the organization, leading Cleveland to its fourth-straight NBA Finals appearance.

A young core headlines the team this time around. First-year Cavalier Donovan Mitchell leads the team, working alongside Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen. The Cavaliers pulled off a quick rebuild, only a few years after finishing with the second-worst record in the league in 2019-20.

Cleveland did well in the offseason, acquiring Mitchell in a trade. His presence was immediately felt and paid dividends as he turned into an elite primary scoring option for a team that went through an offensive slump when it lost the Play-In Tournament last season.

This time around, Cleveland doesn’t have to worry about a guaranteed playoff spot. The team secured a top-six seed and even has a shot at snatching the third spot from the Philadelphia 76ers if things go their way in the last few days of the regular season.

Eastern Conference playoff picture

The Bucks are the first team to book a ticket to the playoffs. They are neck-and-neck with the Boston Celtics, who have a chance to snatch the top seed from the 2021 NBA champions. The next two teams that locked in a playoff spot are the Philadelphia 76ers, and of course, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Meanwhile, the race is tight for the two remaining spots–currently held by the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets, respectively. If the Eastern Conference standings stay the same until the final regular-season day, the Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, and the Chicago Bulls are Play-In bound.

Western Conference playoff picture

Everybody seemed to have taken it personally when Ja Morant said he was fine in the west. Only the Denver Nuggets and the Memphis Grizzlies have guaranteed playoff spots right now. The Sacramento Kings are also inching toward a first playoff appearance since 2006.

It’s a close race between the fourth and the 12th seed teams, with only four wins dividing the No. 4 team Phoenix Suns and the No. 12 team Utah Jazz. This is anyone’s game at this point, and there’s no better reward for us basketball fans than a close race to the playoffs. More than that, the Play-In Tournament for the Western Conference builds up to become an intense matchup between heavy hitters and underdogs.
