2023 Pennzoil 400 Sleeper Picks

By Jeff Stinger

Las Vegas hosts the second race of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series. The campaign runs the Pennzoil 400 on Sunday, and will later return for the South Point 400 in the playoffs. As the season builds momentum, we begin to get a picture of the strong contenders, it’s also critical to check out who can potentially upset the favorites this time around. This weekend sees Kyle Busch drive his homecoming race and takes on the challenge with overflowing confidence. However, it’s worth noting that a few names out there can cause chaos to the pack. That said, Nitrobetting looks into the 2023 Pennzoil 400 sleeper picks ahead of the green flag.

A.J. Allmendinger

The 41-year-old had a tough race at the recent Auto Club 400 race at the Auto Club Speedway. He finished 36th and will try to bounce back from the unfortunate result. Despite starting the season on the wrong foot, we look forward to Allmendinger bringing his experience to the table. He started the 2022 campaign on a positive note. Hence, we expect him to gain traction in the coming races.

The Kaulig Racing driver pilots the No. 16 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Last year, he did achieve a season-best second-place finish at Watkins Glen. In 18 races, Allmendinger penned an average finish of 15.39. These are positive figures in contrast to his average start of 19.4. Furthermore, the California-born driver achieved three top-five finishes and eight top-ten finishes with total laps led of 30. His veteran nature drives us to believe that he can disrupt the front of the pack and is a valuable 2023 Pennzoil 400 sleeper pick.

Justin Haley

Justin Haley races the Cup Series alongside Kaulig Racing for a second year. He will drive the No. 31 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 as one of the younger drivers on the grid. In 72 races run over four years, Haley achieved his best finish of 22nd last year. Since his first race at Talladega’s GEICO 500 in 2019, the Indiana-born driver achieved seven top-ten finishes and a win in his rookie year at the 2019 Coke Zero Sugar 400.

We see plenty of potential from the former NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion. In 36 races last year, he scored three top-five finishes, four top-ten finishes, and 14 finishes within the top 15. In that span, he earned an average start of 22.1 and an improved average finish figure of 18.4. Furthermore, Haley led 44 laps and closed his last season with a final rank of 22nd. Ultimately, he makes it to NitroBetting’s Pennzoil 400 sleepers list due to his improving trajectory.

Harrison Burton

Another young driver named Harrison Burton caps off our sleepers list. The 22-year-old registered his third Cup Series season since first racing at the GEICO 500 at Talladega in 2021. Since then, the 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series Rookie of the Year achieved two top-ten finishes and a best-season finish of 27th in 2022. While his numbers might not look top-notch for now, we see a diamond in the rough here. The youngster has a high ceiling and can achieve great heights in the sport.

So far, Burton held an average start of 22.1 and an average finish of 22.78 in the 2022 season. He led for 35 laps in 36 appearances, scoring a top-five finish and two top-ten finishes. The North Carolina-born driver was unfortunate multiple times and ended with six DNFs last year. Nevertheless, we look forward to Burton racing with a clean slate. He finished 15th at the Auto Club 400 last weekend and starts to pick up the pace.
