Exacta Ticket
- Key Horse: Mage
- Exacta Horses: National Treasure, First Mission, Red Route One
The Derby winner should finish no worse than second. The only horse with a real shot to beat Mage is First Mission and even then, it’s difficult seeing the Lexington Stakes winner taking down the Derby champ. We’ll use the roses winner, and the Preakness chalk, as our key horse.
National Treasure has a lot of early hoof. So if trainer Bob Baffert has taught Treasure how to use his speed wisely, and Mage or First Mission doesn’t run with him, the Baffert runner will have a shot to wire the field.
First Mission is a must-use. Unless the Lexington winner bounces, a top three finish is all but assured. The Brad Cox trained runner has the best shot of beating Mage.
Red Route One requires the right pace set up. Who knows? Maybe, National Treasure, Coffeewithchris, Mage, and First Mission carve out a 45 seconds half mile. If that happens, Steve Asmussen’s horse could close fast enough to get up for the win.
If you bet $10 exactas Mage over National Treasure, First Mission, and Red Route One, your investment is $30. Flip for $5 and your investment is $15. So $30 plus $15 is $45.
Total Exacta Cost: $45
Trifecta Ticket
- Key Horse: Mage
- Trifecta Second Slot: National Treasure, First Mission, Red Route One
- Trifecta Third Slot: National Treasure, First Mission, Red Route One
- Trifecta Fourth Slot: National Treasure, First Mission, Chase the Chaos, Hoosier Philly, Coffeewithchris, Red Route One, Perform, Blazing Sevens
Keeping the three exacta horses in the second slot of the trifecta makes sense. Pushing the all button for the third slot also makes sense because this is a three horse field.
If we play a $1 trifecta, the cost will be $18. If we flip for a buck, placing National Treasure, First Mission, and Red Route One in the first slot and Mage in the second, the cost will be another $18.
Total Trifecta Cost: $36
Superfecta Ticket
- Key Horse: Mage
- Superfecta Second Slot: National Treasure, First Mission, Red Route One
- Superfecta Third Slot: National Treasure, First Mission, Red Route One
- Superfecta Fourth Slot: National Treasure, First Mission, Chase the Chaos, Hoosier Philly, Coffeewithchris, Red Route One, Perform, Blazing Sevens
Using the same three horses in the second and third slots in our superfecta makes sense. Only National Treasure, First Mission, or Red Route One should finish in the top three. The others just don’t appear fast enough.
Pushing the all button for the fourth slot is the way to go with only eight runners. This $1 superfecta ticket will cost you $30.
Total Superfecta Cost: $30
