2023 RSM Classic Golf Odds, Preview and Picks

By Hank Blaine

Ludvig Aberg, Cameron Yung, and Brian Harman lead a terrific field to Saint Simons Island in Georgia this week for the 2023 PGA RSM Classic Championship. The RSM Classic is one of those early PGA Tournaments that can set the tone for the rest of the season. Which golfers should be on your short list to get it done?

2022 PGA RSM Classic Recap

Adam Svensson shot a -19 to comfortably beat Callum Tarren, Brian Harman, and Sahith Theegala by 2 strokes. Joel Dahmen, Cole Hammer, Chris Stroud, Alex Smalley, and Seamus Power followed Tarren, Harman, and Theegala after finishing at -15.

Three players finished at -14, David Lingmerth, Erik Barnes, and eventual U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark. Six players finished at -13, including J.J. Spaun, Taylor Pendrith, and Taylor Montgomery.

2023 RSM Classic Top Pick

The world’s twenty-fifth ranked golfer didn’t play at last year’s RSM Classic. However, Russell Henley should make his presence felt because he ended last season playing excellent golf.

Henley finished second at the Wyndham Championship. Then during the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Henley finished sixth at the FedEx St. Jude, eighth at the BMW, and fourteenth at the TOUR Championship. This is Russell’s first tournament of the season. So he will be motivated to make a statement.

2023 RSM Classic Second Pick

Alex Noren finished third at the Shriners Children’s Hospital in mid-October. Then, after a forty-eighth at the ZOZO, the 41-year-old Swede finished second at the Butterfield Championship.

Like Henley, Noren didn’t play at the 2022 RSM Classic. But he’s in good enough form to be a must consider winning this week. Noren must be feeling confident or he wouldn’t have entered.

2023 RSM Classic Third Pick

For sure, the top choice can win this. But although Ludvig Aberg is playing well, a second at the Sanderson Farms, a thirteenth at the Shriners, and a second at the Worldwide Technology Championship, Aberg has yet to score a victory.

So the odds don’t justify putting Ludvig on top. If you don’t mind the +1200 payout, though, go for it. Eventually, Aberg should break through with a title win. We just don’t believe it happens on Sunday.

2023 RSM Classic Underdog Pick

If you back Kevin Yu to win, make no mistake, you are backing an underdog. Yu has missed the cut in four of the last five tournaments played.

J.J. Spaun finished -13 at last year’s RSM Classic. The finish was 6 strokes off the winner, but it wasn’t terrible.

Heading into the 2023 RSM Classic, J.J. shows up and down form. For example, he finished sixty-seventh at the Worldwide Technology but shot a 69 first round and a 66 final round. If not for the 70-second round and 73 third round, who knows?

So if Spaun can put together four straight rounds of consistent golf, he might have a shot. At the 50-to-1 odds, longshot bettors should take a look at J.J. Spaun to get it done.
