2022 F1 Spanish GP Recap

Red Bull dominated last season’s Spanish Grand Prix. Max Verstappen finished first followed by Sergio Perez in second.

Third place went to Mercedes driver George Russell. Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz Jr. finished fifth followed by Russell’s teammate, Lewis Hamilton, in sixth. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc had to retire.

Top Pick to Win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix

Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso have raced competitively all season long. Alonso started the F1 season by finishing third at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Then in the second race, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Alonso crossed the finish line third again. Fernando finished third at the Australian Grand Prix before a fourth place finish in Azerbaijan.

In Miami, Alonso went back to his third place finishing ways. But in the last, the Monaco GP, Fernando has his best finish of the season, crossing the line in second behind Verstappen.

Now is the time. Alonso has hovered around third-place and clocked a second-place. Aston Martin and their driver believe Sunday is the day for the victory break through.

Second Pick to Win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix

It’s going to be tough to beat Max Verstappen. Red Bull’s top driver had been exchanging victories with teammate Sergio Perez.

But in the last couple of F1 races, Max has clocked two straight wins. If you look at what happened early last season, Verstappen showed the same pattern, yielding two early races to Charles Leclerc before dominating.

The victory in Monaco could be a sign that Max Verstappen is ready to start dominating. The -275 odds aren’t ideal, but they don’t make Verstappen an underlay. So go for it if you don’t mind the odds.

Third Pick to Win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix

Perez didn’t have a great race in Monaco, but that’s okay. Sergio and his crew have been calling all the right shots, which is why Perez has a big chance to get back to the top of the podium.

If the odds were kinder, Perez would be the top pick. But at +300, he’s tough to put on top. Verstappen could be on the verge of breaking out and dominating the season, and the +700 difference between Perez and Alonso is too large to ignore.

He will likely finish third again. If you believe Alonso breaks through, though, you’re getting decent odds.

Top Underdog Pick to Win the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix

Leclerc has one top three finish this season. He retired out of this last season. So we can’t use the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix to make Leclerc our top underdog pick.

So why, then, is a struggling driver and crew the best underdog play to win the F1 Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday? We can’t believe Ferrari is this bad. It’s impossible for Ferrari to be this bad.

Okay, not impossible. But we must believe Leclerc and his constructor, that’s Ferrari, eventually bounce back. Sunday might be the day.
