2023 United States Grand Prix Sleeper Picks
Formula 1 heads to the United States for the second time this year following the Miami Grand Prix in May. This time around, the paddock deployed in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of the Americas for the 17th race of the calendar. Max Verstappen enters the weekend as the heavy favorite having secured his third championship title in Qatar. This is also the fourth race that features a Sprint format.
Despite the championship title wrapped up, there’s still plenty to race for in the coming weeks. Other positions are available for several drivers to fight for over the remaining five race weekends. With that, Nitrobetting gets on with the top 2023 United States Grand Prix sleeper picks below.

Fernando Alonso
- 2023 United States Grand Prix Odds: +5,900
Alonso’s Qatar weekend did not go as planned. He was in the running for a podium before riding the gravel trap early into the race. Regardless, the two-time champion held onto a points finish to grab his 16th of the season. It hasn’t been easy for the constructor since the Canadian Grand Prix. The 42-year-old has been doing most of the heavy lifting for his team since the beginning of the 2023 calendar. With seven podium finishes and a best finish of P2, it’s tough keeping Alonso out of the sleeper picks list around a circuit very familiar to him.
The veteran driver has been logging incredible figures this season. His first year with Aston Martin has been, needless to say, astonishing. The former Alpine wheelman scored seven podium finishes in 17 race starts, including 17 Q3 appearances, a P2 best start, and a best finish of P2. His performances amounted to 183 points good for fourth place in the 2023 Driver Standings.
Nico Hulkenberg
- 2023 United States Grand Prix Odds: +10,000
Haas gives their drivers new race suits for the team’s home race in Austin. But, the new additions go beyond looks. The team has something more substantial to add when it comes to car upgrades. The VF-23 gets a new aerodynamic package that has been under development during the season. It’s patterned after a similar concept to Red Bull’s aero bits that many teams now follow. This could be crucial for Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen over the weekend.
Hulk needs a step forward in performance this season. But, his experience and qualifying results make him a decent sleeper pick this time. Despite finishing out of the points for most of the season, the 36-year-old delivered an incredible P7 finish in Australia. We know he has enough talent to find a points finish, but a first GP win for Hulkenberg in his team’s home race would be historic.
So far, the former Renault driver scored six points in 17 race starts this season, including seven Q3 appearances and a P5 best start which is good for 15th in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
Valtteri Bottas
- >2023 United States Grand Prixx Odds: +10,000
The Finnish driver finally catches a break following two consecutive DNFs in Asia. Bottas is a tested driver and a multiple-time Grand Prix winner. It’s tough to put him out of the sleepers list despite having a relatively underwhelming machine for the past two seasons. Nevertheless, he makes the cut following a points finish result in the Qatar Grand Prix. As for his figures, the former Mercedes driver and 10-time Grand Prix winner appeared in three Q3s with a best start of P7 and a best result of P8.
The 34-year-old currently holds 14th place in the 2023 Driver Standings with 10 points to his name. Despite facing reliability issues and a pair of DNFs in 17 race starts, there’s still more competitive racing left in him. Furthermore, it’s great to see both Alfa Romeos in the points last race weekend. Teammate Zhou Guanyu finished right behind him at P9 and displayed a positive trend for the constructor moving forward.
