2022 WM Phoenix Open Recap

Scottie Scheffler beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff to take home the trophy. Cantlay finished second. Third was a tie among Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka, and Sahith Theegala, all of whom finished a stroke off Scheffler and Cantlay at -15.

Two golfers finished tied sixth at -14, Billy Horschel and Alex Noren. Justin Thomas and Hideki Matsuyama finished tied eighth at -13. This year’s chalk, Jon Rahm, finished tied tenth at -12.

2023 WM Phoenix Open Top Pick

Rory McIlroy didn’t tee off at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open. But last year’s tournament paid a shade over $8 million. With $20 million for this year’s tournament, it makes sense why Rory might want to give it a shot.

So far this season, McIlroy has dominated. Rory won both tournaments played. He took home the top prize at The CJ Cup. Then at the Dubai Desert Classic, McIlroy shot a -19 to finish first.

Rory is picking and choosing the tournaments he’s going to play. The fact he tees off on Thursday means Rory is looking to win.

2023 WM Phoenix Open Second Pick

Jon Rahm’s score at last year’s Phoenix Open was just 4 strokes off the winner. Jon, for sure, can pick it up enough to win this year’s tournament.

Once again, though, Rahm is the chalk and chalk doesn’t often win. Still, if you like Jon to win his third tournament of season, go for it. No golfer is playing as consistently as Jon Rahm, who has yet to finish out of the top ten in any tournament played.

2023 WM Phoenix Open Third Pick

If not for the 62 Scottie Scheffler shot in the third round at last year’s WM Phoenix Open, he probably wouldn’t have won the trophy.

But Scheffler did score the 62 third round. Will he repeat the effort in this year’s event? Scheffler heads into this after a respectable eleventh at the American Express. He’s yet another with a legit chance to lift the hardware.

2023 WM Phoenix Open Underdog Pick

So far, Sahith Theegala has been hit or miss. He has a few decent finishes, like the second at the RSM Classic, but he also missed the cut at the Sanderson Farms and finished sixty-seventh at The CJ Cup. After clocking a fourth place finish at the Farmers Insurance Open, Theegala is moving in the right direction.

Theegala’s tied third in this last year suggests he challenges the favorites on Sunday. If you believe Sahith turns around the form starting this week, for sure, consider backing the tournament’s top underdog play.
