2024 MLB All-Star Game Betting Preview

The 94th Midsummer Classic in Major League Baseball will be held from Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday night with the American League as a short favorite on the MLB odds against the National League – which looks for back-to-back wins in the event for the first time in years.

This year’s game is from the home of the World Series champion Texas Rangers, meaning the AL is again the home team. It still leads 47-44-2 all-time.

Why bet on the National League?

Last year in Seattle, the National League snapped a nine-game losing streak in the All-Star Game with a 3-2 win thanks in large part to Colorado Rockies catcher Elias Diaz as his go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning helped seal the win. Diaz was named the game’s MVP. He was the first Rockies’ catcher to ever make an All-Star team and first Colorado player to earn MVP honors at the Midsummer Classic, making Colorado the 26th different franchise with that distinction. Diaz became the seventh catcher to win All-Star MVP honors, and the first since Atlanta’s Brian McCann, who took home the award in 2010 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. He’s also only the second Venezuelan-born player to win the award, joining Dave Concepcion in 1982. There will be no repeat honors, though, as Colorado’s only choice this year was infielder Ryan McMahon. The starting pitcher for the National League is rookie sensation Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In his final start before the break, Skenes dominated in Milwaukee last Thursday, allowing no hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch with 11 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings. Skenes tied his career high in strikeouts and logged his second hitless start. He finished the outing by retiring 16 consecutive batters and allowed a baserunner in only the second inning. The 22-year-old is undefeated through 11 appearances and has generated a quality start in nine of his last 10 outings. He is 6-0 with a 1.91 ERA and 89 strikeouts across 66.1 innings.

The manager of the NL is Torey Lovullo of the Diamondbacks.

Why bet on the American League?

Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a starter for the AL. It’s his fourth All-Star selection overall. His father made it nine times. Guerrero Sr. and Jr. are the second father-son duo to each be All-Stars at least four times, joining Gus (four times) and Buddy (five) Bell. It will be Aaron Judge’s fifth season making an All-Star Game start for the Yankees, the fourth-most seasons doing so among Yankees outfielders, trailing only Mickey Mantle (11), Joe DiMaggio (nine) and Dave Winfield (seven).

Corbin Burnes of Baltimore, in his first season in the American League, is the starter for the Junior Circuit. Burnes owns a 9-4 record and 2.43 ERA over 19 starts during his first season with the Orioles after six with the Brewers. The 2021 NL Cy Young Award winner has been as reliable as they come since becoming a full-time starter for Milwaukee that year. He has struck out more than 200 batters every season since then, and at the All-Star break this year, he’s got 110 strikeouts over 118 2/3 innings.

It will be the first time a Baltimore pitcher has started an All-Star Game since Steve Stone in 1980. Hall of Famer Jim Palmer (’70, ’72, ’77 and ’78) and Milt Pappas (’65) also started Midsummer Classics while representing the O’s.

The manager of the AL team is Bruce Bochy of the Rangers.
