2025 MLB Opening Day Preview

By Hank Blaine

Major League Baseball’s Opening Day in 2025 is Thursday, March 27. On Thursday, twenty-eight of the thirty teams in MLB are in action. Top matchups include the Yankees hosting the Brewers and the Dodgers taking on the Tigers. Which teams start their season with a win on opening day? Check out baseball odds, analysis, and picks for the top matchups on 2025 MLB Opening Day.

2025 MLB Opening Day Game Previews

Milwaukee Brewers vs. New York Yankees

The Brewers intend on starting Freddy Peralta. Peralta posted a more than 8.0 ERA in three starts during spring training. Although Freddy hasn’t faced Yankee batters much, the results haven’t been good, with a .281 batting average.

If Paul Goldschmidt plays for the Yanks, Peralta will be in trouble because Goldy had a .297 batting average in the spring and has nine hits from 33 at-bats, including a couple of homers off Peralta.

The Yankees, with Carlos Rodon, weren’t great in the spring but have the offense to back up any mistakes. NYY should start their World Series quest with a win.

2025 MLB Opening Day Pick: New York Yankees

Baltimore Orioles vs. Toronto Blue Jays

It’s tough to go against the O’s in this. Baltimore sends Zach Eflin to the mound. Eflin often does well early in the season. Ah, but the Blue Jays have had Eflin’s number.

Toronto bats a healthy .280, 30 hits from 107 at-bats, versus Zach. Also, the Jays’ starter on Thursday, Jose Berrios, was fantastic in spring training. Give Berrios and the Jays the upset at a nice moneyline payout.

2025 MLB Opening Day Pick: Toronto Blue Jays

Boston Red Sox vs. Texas Rangers

You’re not alone if you’ve got the feeling Rangers versus Red Sox could be one of this year’s AL Divisional Playoff Series. Both teams appear poised for a postseason run.

The Rangers send former Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi to the hill. Eovaldi has struggled against his former squad, allowing 22 hits from 70 at-bats, which is why the better play in this game is on the road team Red Sox.

The Sox could have a future Cy Young on the mound in 25-year-old Garrett Crochet. The young pitcher has good stuff. In a start against the Pirates last Friday, Crochet allowed five hits and two walks while striking out 9 in 5.1 innings. If he can contain the Rangers, the Red Sox may have a real ace until Walker Buehler gets off the daily list.

2025 MLB Opening Day Pick: Boston Red Sox

New York Mets vs. Houston Astros

The Mets hope Clay Holmes goes from reliever to starter. So far, the gambit might work. In the Grapefruit League, Holmes was excellent, tallying a .93 ERA in 19.1 innings.

Expect NYM to pitch Holmes for 5.1, maybe 6 in this. That could be enough for the Mets to win because although Houston starter Framber Valdez threw well in the spring, the Stros don’t appear as powerful at the plate as they have in the past.

2025 MLB Opening Day Pick: New York Mets

Atlanta Braves vs. San Diego Padres

Braves versus Padres should be a defensive battle. Chris Sale, the 2024 Cy Young winner, will surely bring it. Pitchers like Sale excel at Petco Park.

So, the ATL could win. But Sale will eventually leave the game, and when he does, the Friars might do enough to steal a win. Expect a low-scoring game where Padres’ starter Michael King keeps this close until San Diego’s bullpen and the Padres’ lineup can grab the win.

2025 MLB Opening Day Pick: San Diego Padres

Chicago Cubs vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

If the Cubs hope to make the postseason, Justin Steele must be the second ace to the Cubs’ top starter, Shota Imanaga. So Steele has a ton of pressure on him in this season’s first matchup.

During the spring, Justin wasn’t good. His more than 11.0 ERA was terrible. He has a lot of work to do to get back the stuff that made him a feared starter in the NL. It won’t happen in this game. At -148, Zac Gallen and the D’Backs are an overlay.

2025 MLB Opening Day Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks

Detroit Tigers vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

The 2-0 Dodgers, LAD, who played in the Japan Series, won’t win every game. They can lose this one because Detroit goes with AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal.

Skubal was as brilliant in the spring as he was all of last year. Shohei Ohtani is 0-6 versus Skubal. Freddie Freeman is 1-of-3, and Will Smith is 0-3. Sure, there aren’t enough stats to say if the Dodgers get to Tarik on Thursday.

But the lack of stats means LAD will struggle to figure out Skubal’s pitches on the mound. Give the Tigers a big chance to pull off the money-line upset.

2025 MLB Opening Day Pick: Detroit Tigers
