2025 NFL Week 9 Top Highlights

Bills Outlast Chiefs at Orchard Park

Buffalo had home-field advantage. In a way, the Bills would get past the Chiefs. What didn’t make sense was how the Bills’ D held Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to 21 points.

Or did it? Kansas City’s offense had begun to roll because Mahomes had his full arsenal. Rashee Rice was back. Hollywood Brown, Travis Kelce, and Xavier Worthy were all healthy. Sure, Isaiah Pacheco was out, but Kareem Hunt is a great backup.

So many expected the Chiefs’ offense to roll. It didn’t. Instead, the Bills’ D came up big, which is the real story of this game. Josh Allen is always going to do his thing. But if the Bills’ defense has finally gelled, then Buffalo is the deserving favorite to win the Super Bowl. Up until Week 9, the Bills’ D had been spotty at best. But versus KC, it was fantastic, sacking Mahomes three times and holding him to a pick and 250 yards. Buffalo is looking good.

Carolina upsets Green Bay

The Packers hosted Carolina as the biggest favorite on the board. Those who backed the Pack were left reeling after Green Bay lost 16-13 to the lowly Panthers. But that’s just it.

With the win, Carolina went to 5-4. Yes, the Panthers have a winning record. Carolina has won 4-of-5 with the lone loss coming in a 40-9 blowout defeat to the Bills, where Bryce Young didn’t play.

Rico Dowdle went nuts versus the suspect Packers’ defense, which is a bad sign for GB heading into a game versus Philly in Week 10. For Carolina, the victory placed the Panthers in second place behind the Bucs in the NFC South. Could Carolina make the playoffs? With two games left versus the Saints and Bucs in their division, yes, Carolina could win the South and host a playoff game. Yep. I just wrote that.

Indianapolis falls to Pittsburgh

The Colts had been riding high because nobody could stop Jonathan Taylor, and Daniel Jones was playing at an MVP caliber. It all fell apart on Sunday when Jones threw three picks and Taylor was held to 3.3 yards rushing per carry.

A lot of Indy’s issues on offense had to do with Mike Tomlin’s defense. For the first time this season, the Pittsburgh defense, which had been playing terrible football, came up huge, and it came up big against the top offense in the league.

If Pittsburgh’s D, like Buffalo’s, has finally come together, then the Steelers are legit AFC contenders. The offense has begun to click; the Steelers scored 25 versus Green Bay and 27 against the Colts. So if the D is solid, Pittsburgh can win the AFC North.

Lamar returns to save the Ravens’ season, possibly

Lamar Jackson returned, and the Baltimore Ravens dusted the Miami Dolphins 28-6. There’s a trend for the better teams in the NFL this season. The defenses were terrible, but as the season has progressed, the defenses for teams like the Bills, Steelers, Chiefs, and Ravens have begun to improve.

For sure, having Lamar back is key. However, the real story was Baltimore’s defense, which clamped down on Tua and the Dolphins. Baltimore also put a beatdown on Chicago’s electric offense in NFL Week 8. So we have to give John Harbaugh and his staff props.

Can the Ravens make the playoffs after starting 1-5 and going to 3-5 after the win over the Fins? Maybe. Among the final games are two contests against the Browns, two against the Steelers, their main divisional competition, the Packers, who are beatable, and the Jets. The Ravens could win all of those gams to finish at 11-5. That would be the most excellent regular season to make a playoff comeback in NFL history. It could happen.
