By Jeff Stinger

The Serbian national team gets a second consecutive appearance in the World Cup since making its debut in 2010. With a diverse talent pool, we expect the squad to make things interesting for Group G frontrunners and tournament favorite Brazil, and European dark horse Switzerland.

The Eagles are likely to have their star striker involved in most plays. With that, we take a closer look at the Serbian striker in this 2022 FIFA World Cup Player Spotlight: Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Positive build-up to Qatar

The 28-year-old is having an incredible year. He recently settled in west London after a three-season stint with Newcastle United that allowed him to appear in 65 matches and score 14 goals. Mitrovic just signed a five-year contract at Fulham and is now with a team capable of creating excellent opportunities for him. The striker now gets more tactical freedom and works well with head coach Marco Silva.

After spending some time in the Championship and recording 43 goals in 44 games in the league, Aleksandar Mitrovic looks in form this season. We might even see the club put pressure on the top five teams in the coming months. Furthermore he is slated as a +6,600 sleeper to win the top goalscorer award in Qatar this November.

Target man

We expect to see the Fulham player do his thing in the box. His height and strength make him an aerial threat. Although the forward has work to do when it comes to opening up to get more opportunities around the penalty area, his eye for goal leads us to believe that he can take the intensity a notch higher through his presence.

Serbia joins the first round as +550 group G winners and not far off from +450 favorites Switzerland. Mitrovic plays a pivotal role in helping his nation secure a spot in the knockout stage. While he rarely gets back to defend, he remains the quickest option for his teammates to play the ball to get attacking opportunities.

A scorer at heart

The Smederevo-born player first played for the Serbian national team in 2013. So far, he collected 75 caps and scored 49 goals in the process. He is responsible for sending his nation to its third World Cup appearance after scoring a last-minute winner against Portugal in November 2021.

He offers decent attacking output and is very hard to push off the ball once he gains momentum. While playing off the ball is not his strongest suit, he can keep the pressure up top. Mitrovic is deadly between the penalty spot and the goal. Expect his teammates to deliver more balls within that area. More than that, he’s also a decent finisher when facing the goalkeeper head-on.
