Australia vs. England 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Odds and Preview
Co-hosts Australia extended their FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign following a dramatic shootout victory versus France, beating Les Bleus 7-6 on penalties. That followed a 2-0 victory against Denmark in the Round of 16, also after leading Group B. Meanwhile, the Lionesses reached this stage of the tournament after sending home Colombia, 2-1. England aims to make their first appearance in the final and prepare to face a roaring crowd at Stadium Australia in Sydney, with a majority of the spectators rooting for Australia.
The two sides already shared the pitch this year after a goal each from Sam Kerr and Charlotte Grant that ended England’s 30-match unbeaten streak in April’s friendly, as the Matildas closed with a comfortable 2-0 victory. Nonetheless, the stakes are higher this time around as both sides seek their best-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup finish moving forward.

Why is Australia a safe bet to win?
Australia played well on the defensive side of things in recent matches, recording clean sheets in four of their five contests–including the last three. Winger Hayley Raso headlines the team’s scoring with three goals to her name. The 28-year-old was a sight to see against Canada in the group stage finale, and found the back of the net in a 2-0 triumph versus Denmark in the first knockout stage. Defender Steph Catley also has a pair of goals under her name, while winger Caitlin Foord has a goal and two assists.
We’ve only seen Australia step inside the pitch as underdogs. With nine goals in five matches, Australia is the seventh-ranked team in the Women’s World Cup. They outscored opponents nine goals to three, and its +6 goal differential is good for seventh-best in the competition. After knocking France out of the tournament, we’ve seen several areas of improvement if they want to go toe-to-toe with the English heavyweights.
Sam Kerr was not fit to suit up for the co-hosts but did bounce back versus France. She’s starting to get into rhythm slowly but surely, and the best time to start to peak for the Chelsea star is now. Australia is playing itself into the tournament. Neither team is quite dominant at this point, which makes this Australia vs. England matchup all the more exciting.
Why is England a safe bet to win?
England attempts to punch their first ticket to the final when they face Australia in the Semis. The nation makes its third consecutive appearance in the Semis after suffering 2-1 defeats at the hands of Japan in 2015 and the United States four years later. This time around, the Lionesses present a robust defensive line. This unit only allowed two goals over their last five fixtures.
Lauren James helped fill the void left by injured Beth Mead as she leads the squad with three tallies and is tied for first in the tournament with three assists. However, the 21-year-old will miss England’s next game as she serves the second of a two-game suspension. The offensive gaps were filled after their win over Colombia thanks to forwards Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo, which we expect to step up against Australia.
While there were major concerns pertaining to the team’s talent to score when a few key players were out of the rotation, several names stepped up to become the breakout star of the competition. There have been good matches involving England, with memorable storylines throughout this World Cup. But, we expect this one to be the best and most anticipated so far.
Australia vs. England Betting Prediction
Both units have been solid in attack, although England’s defense is likely to make things difficult against Australia after the Matildas failed to score on France during their Quarterfinal matchup. What gives the co-hosts confidence is goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, who has been excellent in the knockout phase so far. Having the home crowd behind them is also a huge plus in their bid to take down the Lionesses.
A draw in regular time could brew, but they need to overcome a talented England lineup. The Lionesses are more experienced and have better individual talent on paper. They know how to navigate through the latter stages of a tournament and have enough knowledge about how to adjust accordingly. Australia could unfold unexpected narratives if they can get the game to extra time, but England holds the upper hand here.
