Biggest 2022 NFC Rivalry NFL Matchups

By Hank Blaine

The AFC is loaded with quality teams. The NFC isn’t, which is why there are only four huge NFC rivalry matchups happening this season. Cowboys versus Eagles, Packers against Vikings, Saints versus Buccaneers, and the Rams taking on the 49ers are this season’s top NFC rivalry contests.

Dallas Cowboys vs. Philadelphia Eagles

  • Week 6 – Sunday, Oct. 16
  • Week 16 – Saturday, Dec. 24

Dallas linebacker Micah Parsons won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award last season. Parsons leads a defense that should be one of the best in the league. The Cowboys’ offense shouldn’t fall off even though Amari Cooper is a Cleveland Brown.

For the Eagles, Jalen Hurts has a shot to take the next step. Philadelphia traded a first-round pick to the Tennessee Titans for wideout A.J. Brown. The Eagles were already the top rushing team in the league. So anything the passing game can add will make Philly’s offense fly.

Philly’s defense is good. Eagles versus Cowboys should be a great rivalry in 2022.

Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings

  • Week 1 – Sunday, Sep. 11
  • Week 17 – Sunday, Jan. 1

Green Bay is the class of the NFC North. Minnesota, though, might have enough on offense to score with the Packers. The key in this rivalry will be how well Green Bay’s defense contends with quarterback Kirk Cousins, running back Dalvin Cook, and wideouts Adam Thielen and Justin Jefferson.

Aaron Rodgers must find a new WR1. It’s only a matter of time. So if Green Bay can stop Minnesota’s offense, they should sweep the 2-game series.

New Orleans Saints vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

  • Week 2 – Sunday, Sep. 18
  • Week 13 – Monday, Dec. 5

Before writing off the Saints in this rivalry, it’s important to note that New Orleans has beaten Tom Brady and the Bucs in four straight regular season games.

One of the wins includes the last where a banged up Taysom Hill played quarterback and the Saints’ defense held the high-scoring Tampa offense to zero points in a 9-0 win. An improved defense and improved offense awaits the Buccaneers.

New Orleans improved so much that they can win the division. Keep an eye on this rivalry. Even without Sean Payton on the sidelines, New Orleans should be a good football team.

Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers

  • Week 4 – Monday, Oct. 3
  • Week 8 – Sunday, Oct. 30

San Francisco hands the reigns over to former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance. The move should pay dividends because Lance is younger, faster, and has a bigger arm than Jimmy Garoppolo. Not only that, but coach Kyle Shanahan will call plays that help Lance succeed. On defense, the Niners are tight. The Los Angeles Rams won Super Bowl 56. LAR should be a great team this season. It may not be as good of a squad as last season’s championship winning team, but it will be good. The winner of this rivalry, and, hence, the NFC West, could be the team to beat in the conference playoffs.
