Top Boxing Betting Picks of the Week – August 7th, 2023

By Hank Blaine

One of the year’s top boxing matchups happens on August 12 when Oscar Valdez enters the ring a slight favorite versus Emanuel Navarrete. The contest takes place in Glendale, Arizona on Saturday. Earlier, before the Navarrete versus Valdez bout, Anthony Joshua is back in action versus Robert Helenius in a London bout. Check out boxing odds, analysis, and free picks for Joshua versus Helenius, Navarrete against Valdez, and three other fantastic matches taking place on Saturday.

Top Boxing Betting Picks of the Week (August 7th, 2023)

Joshua vs. Helenius – O2 Arena, Greenwich, London (DAZN)

  • When: Saturday, August 12, 2023. 2:00pm ET.

Filip Hrgovic vs. Demsey McKean

Underdog Demsey McKean has a great 22-0 record. The reason McKean is such a massive underdog in this is because, like Demsey, Filip Hrgovic is also undefeated.

In addition, Hrgovic shows 12 stoppage wins from his 15 victories. McKean has 14 TKO or KO wins.

Both these guys can throw. The issue will be how well McKean will perform versus the best fighter he’s ever faced. Hrgovic comes off a unanimous decision victory over Zhilei Zhang. So although McKean will fight well, Hrgovic’s ability to box if required nets him the win.

Boxing Betting Pick: Filip Hrgovic -833

Anthony Joshua vs. Robert Helenius

Robert “The Nordic Nightmare” Helenius has won 3-of-4. Helenius’ lone loss came versus Deontay Wilder.

Joshua is close to Wilder’s level. Anthony doesn’t have the chin Wilder has, but AJ does possess Wilder’s power. For his part, the former champ has beaten much better boxers, including Andy Ruiz and Jermaine Franklin Jr., than Helenius.

So Anthony gets the win. Joshua should end this early because 3 of Helenius’ 4 losses came via knockout, including falling to Wilder in the first round. Go under.

Boxing Betting Pick: Robert Helenius Under 5.5 -104

Navarrete vs. Valdez – Desert Diamond Arena, Glendale, Arizona (ESPN)

  • When: Saturday, August 12, 2023. 7:00pm ET.

Richard Torrez Jr. vs. Willie Jake Jr.

This matchup is an obvious-let make Richard look good contest. Torrez Jr. is 5-0 with 5 knockout wins.

Willie Jake Jr. has a decent 11-3-2 record. But Jake Jr. doesn’t have much power. So Torrez Jr. is going to walk right through Jake Jr.’s punches and then land heavy wood.

Unless Jake Jr. can escape the onslaught, this one should end early. See if oddsmakers set a total round line and then go under.

Boxing Betting Pick: Under

Emanuel Navarrete vs. Oscar Valdez // WBO World Super Featherweight Title

The lone championship bout on Saturday is also the most competitive on paper. Oscar Valdez heads into the ring after beating Adam Lopez via unanimous decision in his last.

Valdez’ lone loss on his 31-1 record came versus Shakur Stevenson, one of the top five pound for pound boxers on the planet. Even in the loss to Shakur, Valdez fought well, which explains why he’s the chalk over champ Emanuel Navarrete.

37-1 Navarrete has won 31 of his bouts before the final round. Liam Wilson appeared to have Navarrete’s number in Emanuel’s last, but the champ got to Wilson in the ninth.

Navarrete has a wild, strange, style. It can work against boxers like Wilson. It won’t work against a technician like Valdez. Although because of his power, Emanuel is never out of a fight, Oscar exposes Navarrete’s flaws and wins via decision or late round TKO.

Boxing Betting Pick: Oscar Valdez -167
