Why bet on the Atlanta Braves?

Atlanta is going to be without former All-Star closer Kenley Jansen for a while, as he was put on the injured list this week with an irregular heartbeat. Jansen underwent corrective heart surgery — his second procedure — in November 2018 while with the Dodgers after a recurrence of an irregular heartbeat prompted him to be admitted into a Denver hospital in early August 2018. He initially underwent a cardiac ablation in 2012.

Jansen will spend most of the next couple of weeks playing catch and completing bullpen sessions. The expectation is he’ll be ready when he is eligible to come off the injured list on July 12. When this same condition sidelined Jansen in 2018, he was shut down on Aug. 8 and pitched again for the Dodgers on Aug. 20. Jansen has posted a 3.58 ERA while converting 20 of 24 save opportunities this year.

“He’s been dealing with it for a long time,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “I think after dealing with it for a couple of days, he’ll start throwing and keeping his arm strong.”

The Phillies’ chances of earning an NL Wild-Card spot took a major hit this week when it was announced Bryce Harper was to have surgery on his left thumb, which was fractured last Saturday by a pitch from San Diego’s Blake Snell. Harper checked his swing as the pitch from Snell rode inside and high before hitting him on the outside of the left hand.

Why bet on the Philadelphia Phillies?

Philadelphia was hoping Harper could avoid surgery and perhaps return in 3–4 weeks, but now it’s going to be six or more. The reigning NL MVP is hitting .318 with 15 home runs, 48 RBIs and a .985 OPS this season in 64 games despite a small tear in the UCL of his right elbow that has prevented him from playing the outfield since April 16. The Phillies could make a trade for an outfielder now, with Kansas City’s Andrew Benintendi is a potential target given the limited financial impact of his expiring contract and his connection to Phillies president Dave Dombrowski after four years together with the Boston Red Sox. The 2021 Gold Glove Award winner should be available at a reasonable cost since he’s set to become a free agent at season’s end.

Ian Anderson (6-4, 4.60 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for Atlanta on Thursday. Anderson gave up four runs in four-plus innings last Friday in a loss to the Dodgers. Anderson lost for the first time in a month, though his success there was partly a product of the Braves’ surging offense. It was the fourth time in the six-start stretch that he’s given up four or five runs.

Anderson labored through 27 pitches in the first inning vs. the Dodgers, and he said that a standing ovation for former Braves icon Freddie Freeman threw him off: “We knew the fans were going to give him a great reception. He deserved every second of it. It was hard to focus back in. It felt like I was underwater a little bit in that first inning. I was just moving a little slow.”

Anderson hasn’t faced the Phillies this season, and no Philadelphia player has more than nine at-bats off him – no active Phillies have homered.

It’s Aaron Nola (4-5, 2.98) on the bump for the Phils. Nola was a hard-luck loser last Friday after giving up one run in seven innings against the Padres. The one run scored on a single by his brother, Austin. Aaron Nola matched his season high with 10 strikeouts. It was the fourth time in six starts that he’s pitched seven innings and allowed no more than one run.

Nola pitched in Atlanta on May 26 and got the win, allowing just one run over 8.1 innings with 10 strikeouts. It marked the eighth time in his career that he struck out at least 10 and did not issue a walk. He reached double-digit strikeouts for the 23rd time career.
