An Unpredictable Matthew Stafford

Erratic performances can play to a team’s advantage. In this case, Matthew Stafford might just pave the way for the Bengals in this contest. The quarterback put down solid numbers for the Rams since his signing. He threw 41 touchdowns in the regular season and recorded 4,886 yards. His postseason stats are just as impressive, including six touchdowns with a single interception while hitting 72% of his throws.

However, the 34-year-old does have his quirks. His performance dipped in the last few weeks of the regular season. The quarterback threw eight interceptions and accumulated 18 interceptions on the season. This was the most in the league despite seven other quarterbacks recording more attempts.

This is good news for the Bengals. The postseason saw the squad force seven turnovers in three contests, featuring clutch plays against Derek Carr, Patrick Mahomes, and Ryan Tannehill, all of which proved crucial to their victories. Furthermore, not having Tyler Higbee at their disposal makes it more challenging for Stafford. His presence provided Stafford with plenty of confidence. If the Bengals can force several mistakes from the quarterback, it might give them the upper hand.

The Underdog Card

The Bengals entered the preseason with underwhelming odds. It was a slow start for the team after losing two of three pre-season games. Nonetheless, they made their way to the top of the AFC North division and kept postseason chances alive through the Wild Card Round. They took down the Raiders, 26-19, to advance to the NFL Divisional Round where they picked up a narrow win against the Titans.

Subsequently, the Bengals surprised everyone with a 24-27 victory over the Chiefs in the Conference Championships to punch a ticket to the Super Bowl LVI. After a three-decade absence in the Super Bowl, the team clawed their way back in fashion.

They are 7-0 ATS when scoring a field goal or more, winning six of the games outright. They even picked up a win without Joe Burrow in the lineup. Burrow definitely is the main weapon for the Bengals, who are 11-2 ATS in his career when playing as underdogs.
