Why bet on the Los Angeles Dodgers?
Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts and shortstop Trea Turner will both start for the National League next Tuesday and both are MVP candidate. Gonsolin and fellow pitcher Clayton Kershaw rounded out the Dodgers’ contingent. Despite being 11-0 with a 1.62 ERA, Gonsolin is only a +1100 fourth favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award – still, that the game in at Dodger Stadium makes us believe that NL manager Brian Snitker of the Braves would choose him to start in the Midsummer Classic.
Gonsolin’s 1.62 ERA leads the majors and is the fourth-lowest through 16 starts in Dodgers history, joining a group that includes Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and six-time All-Star Zack Greinke. Gonsolin hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in any of his 16 starts.
“I set a goal this offseason coming in and one of my goals was to be an All-Star and that happened,” Gonsolin said. “It’s nice to have it come around full circle.”
He comes off a win over the Cubs, allowing two runs over seven last Thursday. Gonsolin carried a shutout into the fifth inning before serving up a two-run homer to Cubs’ rookie sensation Christopher Morel, which accounted for all of the damage against him.
Could Snitker choose Kershaw instead? His numbers aren’t near as good but the one thing missing from the future Hall of Famer’s resume is being able to say he started a Midsummer Classic. At 34, this could be Kershaw’s last chance to accomplish that.
Why bet on the St. Louis Cardinals?
St. Louis has four All-Stars in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, third baseman Nolan Arenado, DH Albert Pujols and reliever Ryan Helsley. Arenado returns to his hometown for his 7th straight All-Star selection (2015-19, ‘21-22), which ties for the ninth-most All-Star selections by a primary third baseman.
Pujols, a legacy pick along with Tigers star Miguel Cabrera, will also take part in the Home Run Derby on Monday. Pujols, who ranks fifth in MLB history with 684 home runs, will be competing in the fifth Home Run Derby of his illustrious career. He will go into the event with the most home runs of anyone to ever compete, topping the 681 that Barry Bonds had in 2004 when he last competed in the Derby. Pujols participated in the Derby in 2003, ’07 and ’09 while playing for the Cardinals, as well as in ’15 while with the Angels. He has never won the event.
This week, Pujols had the 1,378th extra-base hit in his career, passing former Cardinals legend Stan Musial for 3rd all-time in MLB history.
It’s veteran right-hander Adam Wainwright (6-7, 3.15) on the mound Wednesday. Wainwright yielded two runs over nine innings in Friday’s tough-luck loss to the Phillies. He also gave up five hits and struck out three. Alec Bohm hit two solo home runs off of Wainwright for the only runs of the game. It was the 28th complete game of the ageless right-hander’s career (375 career starts), most of any active player.
Wainwright was the first pitcher to go nine innings and take the loss since Wainwright last season also against the Phillies and also opposed by Phils starting pitcher Zack Wheeler. Wainwright is the first pitcher to have thrown complete games in his 20s, 30s and 40s since R.A. Dickey accomplished that feat in 2015.
Presuming Wainwright won’t throw another complete game, the Cardinal bullpen has been sensational of late, posting a 1.05 ERA over 35 innings in July, limiting opponents to a batting average of just .163. That ranks as the top bullpen in baseball over that span.
