Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Napoli 2023 Champions League Odds & Preview (Feb. 21)
On Tuesday, the battle of two dark horse teams will manifest in Frankfurt, Germany. Bundesliga’s sixth-place club takes on Italy’s top-flight league leaders Napoli. Eintracht Frankfurt gets the home advantage in the first meeting of the Round of 16. The Italian squad is the solid favorite of the two, but we expect Luciano Spalletti and his squad to get a run for their money as they challenge Oliver Glasner’s gritty starting XI. The German club squeezed through the knockout stages on the last day of the group stage and booked a date with the aspiring Serie A winners.

Why is Eintracht Frankfurt a safe bet to win?
Oliver Glasner’s squad started the 2023 Bundesliga on a positive note, ahead of their return to European soccer action. An impressive run highlighted French forward Randal Kolo Muani, whose stock skyrocketed in last year’s FIFA World Cup. He leads the front of the line, having netted a pair of goals in his last two UCL appearances. More than that, he found the back of the net seven times in the previous six games for his club.
We are likely to see changes happen on Eintracht’s lineup this time, despite maintaining a clean sheet and solid defensive performances, he has a full squad and only Eric Dina Ebimbe will watch the games by the sidelines due to injury.
Croatian defender Hrvoje Smolcic can work his way to the game’s starting lineup and play alongside Kristijan Jakic in the back three, while Aurelio Buta may take over for Ansgar Knauff out wide. Meanwhile, Barcelona prospect Evan N’Dicka featured in defense for last year’s Europa League winners.
As for the midfield, Danish winger Jesper Lindstrom should start alongside 2014 World Cup winner Mario Gotze to provide Kolo Muani support. Gotze brought light back to his career and now leads the Bundesliga in distance covered. His work rate is impressive and should play a pivotal role in this home game.
Possible Line-Up
- Trapp
- Jakic
- Ndicka
- Tuta
- Sow
- Kamada
- Max
- Knauff
- Muani
- Gotze
- Lindstrom
Eintracht Frankfurt’s Last 5
- Win: 2-0 vs. Werder Bremen
- Loss: 3-0 vs. FC Cologne
- Win: 4-2 vs. SV Darmstadt 98
- Win: 3-0 vs. Hertha Berlin
- Win: 1-1 vs. Bayern Munich
Why is Napoli a safe bet to win?
Group stage megastars Napoli returns to the Champions League knockout rounds for the first time in three years. The Serie A leaders and clear favorites to stop Scudetto’s domination travel to Germany with a healthy squad in play. Star striker Victor Osimhen is expected to suit up for his club this time.
Osimhen is a huge threat up front as he now scored in seven consecutive Serie A games. However, one of the top performers in Napoli’s lineup, Giacomo Raspadori, misses the game following a thigh injury. Hirving Lozano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are expected to play alongside Osimhen, as the Nigerian star also did well during the group stage and was involved in five goals leading up to the Round of 16.
Kvaratskhelia is also performing well since becoming the first player to score ten goals and register ten assists during his debut season in one of Europe’s top leagues. While Piotr Zielinski watched from the bench in Sassuolo, his record of three goals and a pair of assists in the UCL this season meant he is slated to take over for Eljif Elmas.
Spalletti’s dilemmas involve choosing between Mario Rui and Mathias Olivera at the left back and starting either Lozano or Matteo Politano on the right wing. Either way, we look forward to a competent starting XI taking on the German club.
Possible Line-Up
- Meret
- Min-Jae
- Rrahmani
- Olivera
- Di Lorenzo
- Lobotka
- Elmas
- Zambo Anguissa
- Osimhen
- Kvaratskhelia
- Politano
Napoli’s Last 5
- Win: 0-2 vs. Sassuolo
- Win: 3-0 vs. Cremonese
- Win: 0-3 vs. Spezia
- Win: 2-1 vs. AS Roma
- Win: 0-2 vs. Salernitana
Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Napoli Betting Prediction
Eintracht Frankfurt currently holds seven wins, a draw, and three losses at Deutsche Bank Park. They are a force to be reckoned with in front of their home crowd. The Bundesliga club also pulled off a late run in the group stage, taking down Marseille and Sporting CP in the process after losing to the latter in their opening match. Despite coming in as the match underdogs, there’s plenty of fight coming from this team.
Meanwhile, Napoli holds a Serie A away record of ten wins, one draw, and a loss. They are incredible when playing in uncharted territory. As for their 2022-23 UCL run, they only dropped a game in six fixtures, which is a 2-0 defeat in the hands of Liverpool. Although their confidence needs a bit of work on the international stage, there’s no reason they can’t snatch an away win here.
